My buddy has a 51' CA that we think has a bad spot on the ring gear. Seems like when you shut it off in neutral, the engine stops in the same spot. Then the starter won't engage, but if you take the starter out and put it back in, it will start.

We have been shuttig it off in gear and that works when you remember to do it, bit it's becoming a real pain. Wanted to see what you guys think before cracking it open. Are we missing something?

all motors stop in the same place that is the reason the ring gears go bad ring gear bad starter bendix is worn also

Sounds like a bad ring gear, not that bad a job to change, they only cost $50 or so.

GT I would remove the starter and inspect the ging gear with a light. The fact that when you remove the starter and reinstall it it works, I would check the small spring on the bendix and lube.

Hey GT thanks for the call. I got home about 8:15 pm. My trailer is 33.5'' tall the tractor was 13' 6'' to the cab & another inch for the exhaust. It was a good trip.

I have heard of old timers splitting the tractor just enough to access the ring gear and heating it with a torch and when hot enough turning it to a new location let it cool and you have a new spot for it to start and stop . Cal in Ct.

you can remove the gear and turn it 90 degrees, but your not going to do it thru a 3 inch hole. you will need to pull the motor off the torque tube and remove the flywheel to do it... If you stop and wont engage, rock the tractor in gear and move the motor/ crank a few inches to get to a better spot on the gear.... I have put in 3-4 of the $50 gears. It really is not a bad job. With an engine hoist on the motor, and hanging the back end off a beam in the barn ( strap around the torque tube), you can have it apart in a couple hours easy.
