I have an un-styled WC that I'm going to set up for pulling. It is a hand crank, and I think I'll need to convert to electric start. Any ideas how I go about it?

are you asking how to set it up for pulling or how to convert it to electric start?

To convert to electric start you will need a bell housing from an electric starter WC that had a starter, also flywheel may not have teeth I've never messed with one may need newer flywheel or buy a ring gear for existing flywheel.

Electric Start was introduced in 1938 with the 1st Styled WC.

You need nothing more than a bellhousing from a styled WC, WD, or WD45 and the corresponding flywheel and starter. I would have a starter rebuild shop change the switch contact lump on your starter to a threaded stud and then find a place to mount an older Ford type remote mounted solenoid rather than fabricating a mechanical starter rod. Find a place to mount a 12 volt battery and you're good to go! If you are using a magneto you don't even need a generator/alternator, just charge the battery before every pull.

Kip, thanks, I had the concept right, but I wasn't sure the styled model bell housings would marry up. Thanks to all, DAve

I live about 3 miles from Jim Campbell's tractor salvage and he specializes in IH and Allis. I'll try him first and if no luck then I'll get back in the forum and start looking. Freight from Maryland could get costly. Thanks for the offer though, DAve

A week or so ago you offered me a WC bell housing I can use to upgrade my hand crank WC to electric start. Do you still have the housing, and is it for sale?

Don't forget a flywheel with ring gear.

I can do a starter for you if interested. On occasion in between rebuilding standard starters, I'll do a starter motor for our pulling customer's. Drop a line or give us a call if interested... Steve@B&B bb-customcircuits.com customcircuits@gmail.com
