I doodled this up while stranded in the Denver airport this past Teusday evening. Thought it would be cool to have a track driven WD45. So here is the TRAC-45
Wanted to share....

There was a machine similar to that sold at an auction in Witchita, ks. a few years back. Sure it was homemade, but a nice looking outfit. The only problem I could see, was that the track clutches were the brakes. I don't think they would hold up very long. Dave.

I have the tranny and spot turn differential from an OC46 and all the under carraige. Looks like all I need to do is mount my 45 engine and tin on it. SO what color would mine be then? The OC46 was yellow and the 45 was Orange. i guess it could be Orange over Yellow.

That's pretty shweet! I would like to see something like that built. I know they had track kits for 45s, but a real WD-45 crawler would be KEWL!
I been day-dreaming how to make a "C4D"(Model C with FWA). Almost figured out how to do it, in theory anyway. Would be selectable 2 or 4 WD, just don't know what I could get a donor front axle from. Maybe fab up something by hand.
Think about it Jeff. I was wanting to keep the row crop look, so I was thinking "portal"-type axles(used in military Hummers, and Mercedes military trucks(unimogs)). If you got an idea of what i'm thinking, draw it up sometime. I'd like to see what it might look like. I have no artistic traits whatsoever.

That's what I'm talkin' about Joe. Maybe a CE engine with C-B sheet metal. My Cletrac is only supposed to have 25 HP.

Some of the aftermarket FWD seemed to have used truck front axles, like from a Dodge 4wd truck. Then the trick is matching up tire sizes and gears so both ends run the same direction and speed. At least one ran from the PTO which meant it could only be used in one forward gear. Though I suppose one could tack in another tranmission with the same gear ratios as the main but it would take a careful operator to be sure that both transmissions were in the same gear. Or like the FWA in the new generation JD, do it with hydraulics, though those were weak and most have been destroyed and replaced. Took a 25 gpm hydraulic pump and geared hydraulic hubs.

Gilson Rieke used to make toy WD45 crawlers by order, just what you are wanting. Of course I had one and sold it.

Gerald, what I had in mind was breaking the tractor between the tranny and the ring gear housing, adding a short housing with an output yoke toward the front of tractor, and using a chain and two sprockets. One sprocket would be on a short shaft between the tranny output and ring gear, with drive sprocket. Other sprocket would be in the lower section of housing. Think of a chain-driven transfer case for a truck. It would make the tractor a little longer, but no more than 6".(still need to study the parts breakdowns to see if that's even doable)  The front drive shaft would then run under the belly of the tractor to the front differential. I could have a sliding disconnect for the shaft to make it selectable 2 or 4 wheel drive. Still thinking about front axle setup. Want to keep the row crop look going. Would definitely want hydraulic steering.

Why emulate a truck transfer case? Why not use one and a truck front end? There would be a place to help adjust drive ratios so the tires front and rear covered the same amount of ground per 1000 engine revolutions. The rear of the WD with the drop boxes has a lot of reduction from engine to axle. You have three places to match that. Tire sizes, front axle gears, and transfer case ratio. It will be hard to work in 16" front tires and have much axle to crop clearance though I suppose a drop box could work like the rear axle, but then there's a lot of structural weakness to overcome. You would probably have to turn the front pumpkin over to get the rotation on a simple axle going the right direction since the rear drop boxes with their gears let the rear axles run the opposite direction of the tires.

It would be a heck of a lot easier to put in a dummy transfer case, and a real truck front axle if you are just going for appearance.

I have often thought about making a small AWD tractor using the engine and drive train from a small front wheel drive car. I would mount it in line and use the axle shafts as drive shafts to the front and rear axles. This would give about a 3:1 speed reduction. I would use the front and rear axles from the early Suzuki 4 X 4 as they were quite narrow. Unfortunately I seem to find more projects to do than time to do them.

DonBC, My late brother Bill and I sketched one of those up about 20 years ago. 2.2 dodge omni with a 5 speed and a pair of ford courier rear axles, with the front one flipped over. The thing would do about 35 in 5th and maybe 5 wound up in low. If you had limited slip in all differentials you could just about climb trees with it.

I'm like Don, I have more ideas than time and money to do anything with them. I would plan on building something that actually worked if I built it. I'm sure I could do it, providing I had unlimited time and descent funds. Unfortunately, that isn't in the near future. Still a neat concept though.
