I know that this is off topic, My wife and I purchased a farm last year (yeah!) and gained a large 60'x40' bank barn, its metal roof is in dire need of a fresh coat of paint... but I do not know what paint to use.  The roof does have a lot of rust. I asked the guys at LOWES and Home Depot, but they did not know what to recomend. I know there has to be some farmers on this site that know what to use. I am looking for a paint that will last a while and not cost an arm and a leg. Any suggestions??

I painted the roof on my lodge in Alaska that had very heavy rust. I didn't do any prep other than blow off with air.It was a three part epoxy that has been on for 21 yrs and shows no sign of rust.I bought at napa paint store.HTH

I bought the fibered galvnized looking paint at Farm And Fleet. It's made for trailer roofs I think. Put it on with an O'Cedar angler broom. That was 23 or so years ago. It could use another coat now. I did get my SIL to help powerwash it first, probably wouldn't of had to do that.

Or just pull all the nails, flip it over and nail it back down. Should be good for another 50 years. LOL

Before Armand DeYoung sold his place in Cedar Rapids, I came up and helped him do his metal roof on his building. That has been two years now and we went to Sherwin-Wiliams to see what they recommended. They had a product that we used that was supposed to last several years. I would go talk to them and get their opinion. After being out of the business for 5 years there is a lot of changes in new materials.  Dave.

There is a guy from TX that makes the rounds here every summer. He uses the asphalt bases paint. We got 2 years on a roof now. Looking good so far.

I hired a guy who does it for a business, sprayed the roof of both parts in a hour or two. has been on for 10 years now and still looks good as far as wear and holding up. Asphalt based aluminum colored material , only thing it did not adhere good to areas where i had used silicone caulk on nail heads to stop some leaks.
