This is my second winter as using my D-A 916H on the snow-blower. It has a Kohler K341 16hp single and a 13 tooth starter. Having never had another kohler I have always lived with the fact that it starts hard in the cold. Last winter i replaced the starter, battery, and used 0w40 synthetic oil. Before I replaced the starter I was pointing a torpedo heater at it for 30 minutes so it would crank fast enough to start. Today I went to start it and it wouldn't crank even when jumping it from the truck. I know that these kohlers can't be that hard to start and it wasn't very cold about 10 degrees. I am going to change the starter and see if it fixs my problem again but am getting sick of not being able to rely on it to start.

Going to sound obvious but you might double check your battery connections and the grounds. You could also try jumping straight to the starter instead of to the battery.

The battery is grounded to a head bolt and I jumped to that and the starter terminal. Their wasn't any difference in the cranking speed.

This sounds obvious to, but its always overlooked. Charge the Battery and do a draw test on the Battery. It may be the Battery that's your problem. Kohlers usually don't have a problem starting, even in the zero weather especially if their inside a shed or garage. My 716H was stubborn once in a while, but always spun over fast and always fired up even in the super cold. I think it was stubborn once in a while due to operator problems. As AC Mower guy mentioned, check the connections. Also, make sure the cables are all good. Renew the cables if you think they may be originals.

have to ask is it hard or slow cranking inthe summer on a cold start especalily getting past the compression stroke dosnot happen often but somtimes the atuomatic compression realese spring or pawl onthe camshaft gets stuck so it is always starting at full compression all k kohlers and magnums have this if it is working you can tell by useing a compression tester when cranking it will show low compression if the compression release is working if it show normal operating compression it is not this also based on the fact that the valves seal and are adjusted corectly if the cam has to come out for a bad compression relaese inspect very close for cracks in the cam we are starting to see alot of cracked or broken cams on the engines remember these motors are getting old now but will still out last two new ones

It has never cranked very fast. The engine has had a new rod,piston and rings last year. When it wasn't turning over fast last year I took the head off and the valve was held up slightly when cranking. It seems to crank as good as my Jd 300 did wich had the same work done to it.

I took the starter apart and the magnets were broken. I took the case from the other one and made one good starter. I will clean all the connections and load test the battery. Is the cable from the solenoid to the starter supposed to be as heavy as the battery cables or is a lighter gauge one okay?

My starter cable is same size as battery cable. I think they should be to handle the load. I learned something today about a Briggs I'm have trouble with, it's an overhead valve motor. Sometimes the valves get out of adjustment and cause hard/slow cranking. The motor acts like bad starter. Tested starter, it's good. Replaced solenoid. New battery. I was talking to someone smarter than me in this field and he told me about the valve thing. Don't know if that's your problem but it may be worth a look. Good luck.
