 Topic: Power Steering on WD45 and what's this thing do?

Couple of questions about power steering on the WD45.
When I got the tractor the return hose for the power steering syste from the steering column leading up to the reservior, was off. This appears to be not under any pressure. It goes up to the can mounted up high.
The reservior was a mess inside. I opened the can and scrubbed it out with gas, and I think I can get most of the crud out with some fine steel wool. The screen filter inside is rusted through on top and needs to be replaced. Where can I get one?
Let's say I get the new filter and reassemble the whole thing. Do I just fill the reservoir with power steering fluid to get it going again? What kind of fluid should I use?
Two other pics are down near the distributer. This cap appears to be a place to fill something. Looking inside there is nothing down in there. What does this thing do? And should I be filling it with something before I start it.
Appreciate the help.

Well, I cannot help with the P/S, but the cap on the distributor/governor coupling is the engine oil fill point

The cap near the distributor is for filling the engine oil as the valve cover is not accessible with the hood on. The power steering is hard to tell. Yes, it can be filled with power steering fluid but the question is why was the return line off?

I was told to use DexronII in the factory PS. I don't know if they still sell it. Got any pictures of the PS unit and reservoir?

Just to clarify. It's ok to add oil through the breather on top, right? 'Caus that's where I poured it in.

the power steering fluid originally called for 10 weight non detergent motor oil in the winter, 20 wt in the summer.

My wd45 is a 1953 and the power steering came factory installed in later models, I'm guessing my system is an add-on. When I look inside the power steering pump, the petroleum substance in there is THICK, like vasaline, nothing like 10 wt. And I'm not sure how to get the goo out of there to replace. It certainly can't be siphoned, and there's no drain plug. Any suggestions??

You will most likely have to remove the pump and take it out of it's case and take a parts washer to it. If the pump is like that, your hoses and torque generator probably aren't any better. Looks like a complete tear down and cleaning to do the job right.

If you can "look inside your power steering pump" you don't have Allis PS. If the pump has a built in reservoir, take the pump off the tractor and flush it with diesel fuel or some type of solvent to get rid of the crud.
