I have what I believe is a 610 Allis Chalmers forklift. It has a D15 Series 2 engine (160 cu. in.) When I start the forklift the power steering is really hard to turn. It takes quite a while of warm up before it works properly. The forks lift right away. Do you have any suggestions? Am I getting air into the system when it sits overnight?

In January of 2025 you said: "we do not suspect the pump". Back then, I told you I thought it was the pump. Yesterday, I again told you I thought the pump was losing its prime when it sits. I am visualizing a single TANDEM (twin) pump that has a problem in the power steering section and it may be at the driveshaft end of the pump, pulling air thru the shaft seal.

And I don't know because I'm not there looking at it. You can't have LIFT hydraulics and then have ZERO power steering if there is one pump. A priority/flow divider valve could be a possibility but your description doesn't make me think so. If there are two exit lines on your pump, it is a twin tandem pump.

I have one that does the same thing if left sitting for a few days. The colder the weather the worse. The steering section is the one next to the drive - just like a series IV D17. There is a relief for the steering that dumps back to the intake pipe but don't think that is the issue. After a few minutes, it works fine. Lift works fine all the time. Common sump. It does have manual steering as the steering wheel is doing the steering with great difficulty.

Getting back to you all. It is a dual pump. I did replace two seals and two O rings where the pump attaches to the transmission. I replaced two O rings in the steering motor attached to the steering wheel. It seems to be working better. I have not driven much yet. It might still be getting the air out of the system. The seal that I would suspect first would be the one on the end of the dual pumps driveshaft, which maybe you changed when you had the pump removed ??
