I try very hard to get them back to the original color, I spend alot of time rebuilding the original tin trying not to buy after market parts.But when it comes to the shine I love to see the paint as smooth and shiney as I can get it.The origanal paint job was put on there for coverage not for looks so runs missed areas and flat spots were part of it. People will always have to find something to point out that is wrong .I think that the tin work on the old tractors had so much style and charactor that a nice shine just brings that out.I paint to satisfy myself  and would rather have someone say it to shiny then some of the other thing I have heard about other peoples work.I don t judge others work unless I am asked or they tick me off then it open season.I am just glad to see these ol girls fixed up and not heading to the scrap yard.I have seen people that painted them with a paint brush that stand next to them and are just as proud if there work as I am of mine ,so its all good.

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I can't bash anyone, for slappin a new coat of paint on an old tractor. Whether thats with a world class HVLP gun, or straight out of a can with a 10 cent brush.
 
When someone takes the time, and effort, to fix up an old tractor, to make it run once again after years of sitting, thats a lost talent. How many people do you know in the suburbs that even give 2 flips about old tractors? Not many. So to the people that take time to even just be around old tractors, I salute you.
 
We gotta remember one thing about these old pieces of iron. They are stamped steel, and cast iron on rubber wheels. Thats it. We can't take em with us, and the good Lord don't want em.
 
Don't take this the wrong way, I respect those that get every nut and bolt the right shade of orange. I just don't see anything wrong with those that paint the tractors the way they want em. ;)

DON(MI) You said it all. I totally agree. However from a different perspective, it seems that old tractor collectors keep wanting more gloss and better finishes than ever. In the 20 years I've been painting tractors on the side it seems I have to keep putting better finishes on these tractors because thats what brings more business in the door. The good part about that is it has pushed me to become better at what I do. One thing I haven't done is gone to a base/clear finish because I've seen too many scratched up clear coats from the way we handle tractors differently than autos. Hopefully a good polyurethane finish will be good enough until I decide to hang the sprayer up. Again there is nothing more satisfying than to see and to talk to someone who has just refurbished/restored their own tractor their own way and is happy and proud to talk about it with me. That's what makes this whole tractor thing exciting to me.

  Hello Ken!!    For the last several years I believe that PPG # 60080 has been accepted as PO#1.   I don't have the PO#2 part # at hand.  And the fact of the time and cost, we don't need paint to fade on a customer's tractor.   PS Is it spring there yet???  Allen

     Spring has sprung. Stuff we pushed in poly tunnels is ready for market. This was a experiment and labor intense. 4 bushel of baby spinach got picked yesterday one leaf at a time. If I can't get $4 a # for it we worked all day for peanuts. Even at that the wages fall far short of minimum of what farm labor costs.
     The pics Gary Arneson posted a while back of his 38 B#751 resto/referb was one of my no fade PPG 60080 omni paint jobs. Couldn't make time to do any tractor work this winter. Maybe next fall I can do another one for me.

I painted my WD with Persian #1 and did the best job I could to do everything like original but then I also will use and have used the tractor just like the first owner did and that WD will earn every nick and scratch and I don't feel too bad about it. To me it wasn't meant to sit and get stared at. That's just me though.

I think dusty and I were talking about this at the Florida show. It used to bother me to see AC's with so many shades and the wrong paint on them, BUT I will have to say I now believe sence I'm not paying for anyone elses restoration As long as they are happy with their finished product I am as happy as a holstein in a honeysuckle patch. If they are proud of their choice of paint I will be proud with them. I realy engoy seeing original, never painted tractors at the shows. I will check them out first at the shows. Scott

I try to go as orginal as possible also, but sometimes I get tripped up. Plug wires, starters, ect do not get painted orange, although I think most were from the factory. I messed up on the cream on my D19 Wheels, I matched it incorrectly at the paint store, I use Dupont Nason
