Neighbor shows up at the field next to me with his 7 bottom plow and 400 horse JD 4WD. He plants wheat every 5th year and plows it under.
Now here in west central indiana we have about 5 inches of snow on the ground. Watching him from the back window it was obvious that wheel slippage was a problem, no doubt locking in the diff locks and some areas wiggling the tractor to get tractions, sort of speed up and slow down all the way across the field. Now I have only plowed on smaller tractors with 5 or less bottoms and never done it when the weather was this cold and especially with snow on the ground. Does anyone else here plow with a thick blanket of snow? |

I know of some people around here that have done it. It puts nitrogen back into the soil.

It holds it out of the air somehow. When the snow melts the nitrogen volitizes and dissapers back in to the atmosphere, but if you can get it trapped under the ground while the snow is hoolding it you will get the benifit

Guess he gave up, made 3 passes and left. Probably to much slippage.

Maybe he found a source for cheaper nitrogen! I would think with a 400hp tractor and 7 bottoms he could plow through just about anything. I pull 5 with a 7040 and have very little trouble.

When I was an agronomy student at Iowa State, they discussed the nitrogen in rainfall/snow. Seem to recall that it was only good for about 10lbs a year or so. The fuel burnt trying to cature that would probably easily buy those 10 lbs. AaronSEIA |

If the conditions are right it works well. I've done it without the slippage but the snow was only 2 or 3 inches and very fresh.

The problem with plowing snow in Indiana right now is the ground is wet under the snow. I've plowed under lots of snow over the years, Looks neat with everything around you white.
