I always just cut them as I planted and I always had a good crop.
Last year, I had Late Blight on my potatoes and tomatoes. (Late Blight is rumored to be the same disease that caused the Irish Potato Famine). It basically destroyed my second planting of potatoes and hurt my early planting pretty bad. This year, I will plant no potatoes for the first time in years. I have already started some tomatoes that are supposed to be Late Blight resistant.
