Went to use the 175D with the supposedly "new" engine and "rebuilt" pump in it this afternoon and it started to miss and puff black smoke after it started up. I thought maybe if I worked it a little it would come out of it but it just got worse. I shut it down after about 10 minutes....any ideas of what is wrong? It ran great the last time I used it, but the engine did seem a bit noisey.

Pull the injectors and have them tested. Could have a tip split or stuck. MACK

I don't know how the intake pipe or tube connects the air filter and the manifold on one of these but if possiable take it off and run the engine for a bit to see what it acts like. I've seen stupid things like mouse nests, shop rags, etc plugging an intake tract.
I don't know for sure but I'd think it's a CAV pump. Next check the pump timeing. I've worked on a few Perkins and they alwayse seam to be fussy on the timeing. It is possiable that the diesel shop timed the pump to the wrong spot on the ring to snap ring inside.
