I was talking with a guy this evening who used to run both WD45 gas and WD45 diesel tractors. I asked which was the better tractor and his answer was the diesel could do more work. In my experience I have thought that the gas 45s would bury the diesel 45s. What is your experience? Oh I know the Nebraska test ratings of the tractors.

I have one of each, the 1953 gas has 43 horse, and the 1956 diesel has 46 horse. They have both been outstanding pulling in there class. 4,000 lb and 4,500 lb for the gas and 5,000, 5,500, and 6,000 for the diesel, winning an occasionally 6,500.
This summer I loaded the gas tractor with all the weights that I used on the diesel to see what it would do. I'am 200 lbs lighter than the diesel in the 5,500 class, but the best I've been able to do is 3rd place. and the gas has occasionally stalled instead of spinning out.

For relatively little money a gas tractor can be made to run circles around a diesel. In stock form the diesel may have a little edge.

You could oversize the pistons and cylenders on the gas if they are not already. Probrably get a couple more horsepower. |

175 Piston kit (8.25:1) and 175 Governor weights would do the most for the money?

A diesel will gain a lot more power as the engine gets broke in. I know a guy who has a 45 diesel that dynos close to 55 hp and the engine is original.

You can usually "turn a diesel up" much easier than you can modify a gas engine for the same additional horsepower.

They had overbores for the 230 diesel back in the day too. My opinion diesel would be cheaper on fuel. You could turn it up some for the cost of an allen wrench but probably the gas would be less problems of the two since this was there first diesel and the bugs were not worked out on some. I just like the diesels anybody know how they compared on torque?

i don't remember the story and both are deceased now,but dad said "uncle" demoed both back in the day and went with the gas(still on the farm). Both pulling 4-14's SC. I'm sure dad said the gas out worked the diesel.....

our 2 gassers outworked the neighbors 2 diesels anytime we were together. All were on 4-14's SC plows. They used less fuel but at days end we had more done. I remember a dealer demoing a Diesel pulling in behind Dad and couldn't keep up. Again both on the same plows.

Both of our WD45 tractors are equipped with the standard engine. When we worked these tractors in the 90's the diesel would out pull the gas pulling a 12 ft MF disc. |
