Funny how times change, Grandmother for some reason had kept a series of pay envelopes of my Grandfather's, she destroyed them before we could abscond with them.  Had his annual payroll written on the outside, each pay period where showed taxes paid against gross pay and his net pay result which was In Cash in the envelopes back in the 1940s.  Shell Oil Co Roxana IL.  The envelope was returned for each subsequent payday until end of year so would be used as a W2 is today.  She kept the last IIRC four or five years worth before they paid in Paychecks.

Dad was a Union Carpenter, I was pretty little, but I remember at least on some jobs they would hand out the checks, then cash them on the spot. I remember hearing dad saying something to mom about it. the phone I have now belongs to the employer. When I retire, I will have one of those prepaid jobs.  | |||

In my younger days we use to stop by the local bar after work on Friday.... Owner made a point of having $50K on hand every friday.. Local workers would line up to cash their pay checks with him. I take the grandkids to McDonalds 2 times a week for lunch.. Drive thru.... 90% of the time, the guy in front of us is paying with CASH.. I use VISA.

Know several here around Hermann, get their check go to grocery store, cash that check and go pay bills, NOT ever had a Bank Account, do not want one.  IRS hates them as has to send them a Check for refunds if ever get one, they send a Money Order when owe.  BTW, NOT Indigenous Nor Black Nor Latino, White as day is long, four are Women. if the stores would just say "cash only" one day a week, that would cause havoc! this is just one more way the gubbermint wants to control things. maybe they'll all become communistic and kill all normal folks like they did the jewish people?

I don`t have a checking account,  haven`t had one most my life.  I also don`t have a smart phone.   I have a flip phone that I take and use while on the road for emergencies only.  Most of the time it sits on my counter turned off.   WOW!  How did I live so long without either one?

I remember, I think it was about 8 years ago now, there was talk about banks not taking cash, nor giving cash.  They were going to charge taxes on any paper checks deposited.  I never did hear anymore on that though, but maybe that was the start of all of this!!

Steve, who are these 30 million? how do they get their paycheck cashed? How do they pay bills? My suspicion is most of those are indigents, or illegals, and Like I said, one suggestion was 'barcoding' them. But, there are possibly some off the grid'rs  in that number, and they are some of the ones the gu'mnt is looking for! they WILL pay their taxes!

Dave, I know people will laugh at me for this, but those people you speak of will be tattooed with a bar code!  This IS coming, only a matter of when. It has it's advantages, but it will cost us our privacy and anonymity! every breath you take, every step you take, every choice you make will be monitored and recorded by the government, who knows better than oneself what is good for them.  Most of us may not see it all in our lifetime, but we are already seeing it now, to a small degree. you already cannot travel feely w/o being monitored. in many states, you must have an EZ pass to travel toll roads, or, you will be billed by mail. That is all recorded. Your picture is taken as you roll through the gate, your auto registration number is recorded, and your ezpass is recorded. You go to the Dr, your picture is taken, all your personal information is recorded and placed in a national 'cloud bank'. A lot of what we accept today as normal, our forefathers would be aghast at!!!!!

For what it's worth Sweden has been working on this for several years and is scheduled to go all cashless in 2023.  Granted it's a smaller country and fewer people.  Banks will probably love it because I'm sure there are fees involved and savings in not having to handle the money.  On the other hand fewer jobs.

Several years ago I was at a convention in Lost Wages.  We were staying in one of the casinos, don't remember which.  I took a roll of quarters with me so I could win my fortune, discovered none of the slots took coins anymore.  Asked an employee about that, was told they changed over the machines to plastic because, 1 employees were getting sick and injured handling all the coins, 2. It cost more money to process the coins and 3. the insurance companies wanted to cut their expenses and offered cheaper rates if the casinos didn't deal with coins.  The guy told me the coin op laundry a couple blocks away still had coin slots but I never got there to try.  Came back with the roll.

Cannot see it ever happening with the poor, can barely manage a Debit card against a bank account IF they have one, know a few that still do not and have to cash paychecks at the grocer to pay bills for the month.

Won't stop anything, the necessity of a druggy to get his materials could switch to stolen goods barter or gold or silver, even loaded cartridges' or firearms.  Stolen cars motorcycles, titles, deeds, license plates you name it can be used as a barter object.

We got a Square reader for credit cards last year for use at the Farmers Market but had trouble with it, fortunately, we have a cash machine at the Markets and also sold "Market Bucks", $5 script, good at any stand.  Also people got  WIC and SNAP vouchers.  This year we only have a couple scrip vouchers, no Market Bucks and my sales are about 50/50 cash or credit cards.  Got a new Square machine and it works pretty well.  With all the rules and restrictions I now bag up the peaches and another guy takes the money or card payment.  It's working OK so far.  I seriously doubt that cash will go away completely in the near future.   | |||

| People all over are now using the credit card readers that plug into a cell phone.  You can pay the babysitter online.  HD's self checkouts are Card only now.  I did have to drop a few dollars into the can at a roadside produce stand today so I don't know how that'll work! | |||
