The shutoff valve on the sediment bowl for my D17IV has been leaking.  I tightened the gland nut but it still leaks.  Now that it is nearly empty, I plan to back off the nut and renew the packing.  Any suggestions?  Would butchers cord work?

Any small string will work.. if it is teflon or wax coated that helps..  Dental floss , wax string, even plumbers telfon tape can be used.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I work in the pump business, so I have access to square braided packing. A one or two inch long piece of packing, once you un-braid it, will yield many strings of packing suitable for your task.

Thick yellow PTFE gas tape did the job nicely.  I couldn't find any hydraulic or similar string.  Ready for another 60+ years of use.
