I am looking at buying a AC wd-45 to D17. I am currently looking at a AC D14. They are asking $2500 for it. it has had the engine rebuilt and a new clutch. and the front sheet metal fixed and painted. But the guy said it wont stay in 4th gear. He said it looks possiblly like a worn or bent shift fork.
My question. Does this seem like a good deal even with a trans issue? I could run the tractor just not in 4th gear until i find a fix?
Tractor will be used on a small horse farm for mowing and plowing arena.

Without taking a look see I would say it is a little on the high side, but if the engine has been redone and the sheet metal good including good fenders mite well be a good deal. Fred

The tractor is on tractor house.com
It needs a 3 point conversion and draw bar. So would it be a problem to keep using the tractor with out 4th gear for a while? Or would I be better off to find one all original in good working order?

I forgot to add I have not heard of any nor staying in forth, it could be a shifting fork. That would be an easy fix. Fred

it does seem most issues are second and third gear. I talked to him on the phone and he said he removed the shift fork to inspect it and it looked like it was bent and someone tried to repair it and braized it. I like this little tractor just trying to figure out if i should take the chance on it with this trans issue.

OK, I'm partial to the D-14 since I have two, one is my first tractor.
It poping out of 4th doesn't doesn't bother me, unlikely you're be going that fast on the farm !
Just saw the pictures...real good rear rubber is a BIG bonus,especially on PA rims,looks like a new manifold as well. I'd offer $2000, be happy getting it for $2250(wife would kill me...).Prices are kinda dependant on location and 'colour' preference.
How far is Newport,MI from Holland,MI ? I've got two spare drawbars(one normal, one heavy duty), never use them as I made my own 'carryall' setup with 2" receiver.I use it to pull trailers,tandem discs,harrows,etc.

That what i was thinking. Might not ever need fourth gear. I can just go slow and take my time. Newport is on the east side of the state by Fermi power plant lake erie. Well i might head up to where that tractor is with a trailer and cash. Any suggestions as for a good three point set up? So far I'm thinking the one Saginaw tractor has for sale.

CB, as for the three point, go with the one that uses the original drawbar. Usually doesn't come with the kit. Don't go with another just because you have to locate the drawbar. You want the traction control to work with your three point.

Thanks guys. Yes I have read that the draw bar mounted ones are alot better and stronger. The draw bar missing wasnt really scaring me away as much as the trans issue. An needing to find a grill for it. But is seems like a pretty good deal and im a big fan of Allis Chalmers tractors and look forward to owning my first. It seems like they are very reliable and last a long time. I baled hay for a guy all through high school and got to drive the AC 185 deisel from time to time

Even with a rebuilt engine and new clutch and fresh paint on the front and good tires, thats not worth $2000 even though there is an issue with the trans and the draw br is missing and the grill and two side panels? |

Even the way it is, you can get a lot of work out of it for the money. What other brand of tractor can you buy that size for that money? None. And the beauty of em is that the lift arms are already there for an easy and nice looking 3 pt conversion. And I assume you realize that you need to use the power director for live PTO, and if you areall right with that, whittle em down as far as you can on the price, and go for it! Darrel

1500 to 1800 bucks is all I'd give....I let one go last fall that had 2 bad rims and needed engine work for 500 bucks....but its all in what YOU want to spend haha

Who exactly does the power director work for the live PTO? I guess my biggest concer is if the trans issue is a shift fork or an even worse gear problem. But even if it does end up having a gear issue i could still use it for awhile with out 4th gear untill a fix is found correct? Thanks guys for all your help and info for my desicion making. It looks like a sharp good tractor and i like that the engine is rebuilt and has a new clutch |

The power director allows the PTO to keep spinning while you slow or stop forward tractor motion where stepping on the clutch pedel will stop both. It's good for mowing/bailing when you get into some thick stuff and want to slow or stop the tractor but allow the PTO to keep going.

No one has mentioned the cost of the new rear rims. The left one is starting to show rust and the right one looks like it may be pretty bad. Those are expensive to replace, add a 3. on to that and you're looking at close to a grand just for those. I wouldn't own it because I wouldn't go over 1200 for it, and I love my D14's!!!

So the hand clutch is the other part of the power director? or is it something else? If so you use the hand clutch to slow or stop the tractor just not to shift it into another gear.

Well let me just say that on my 170 it has neutral in the middle with low range pulled back and high range pushed forward. It may be different on this one so I could be full of beans.

Yes, the Power Director is a 2 speed transmission with nuetral, giving you 4 high gears, 4 low gears and neutral. It allows you to remove power from the rear wheels yet the PTO will still spin. Great for slowing down the tractor when cutting tall grass.This way you don't have to use the foot clutch to slow the tractor down which would stop power to the PTO.Both my D-14s will still creep along in PD neutral, which I think is common. As far as rear rims go, regular 26" 'combine' rims fit fine and are cheap to buy.If your local fall fair has a 'combine demo derby',make a friend there and get a set after the show! I got a set for my D-14 for just $50! Good rubber too.You don't want to buy NEW tires, sticker shock will kill you ! |

CB, I assume you mean "how" instead of "who" does the power director work. Well, it's like stan says, but to elaborate a little farther on it, you see, on most all Allis Chalmers tractors prior to the 7000 series, the PTO would stop turning when you step on the foot clutch. Quite a problem when mowing and such. To get around this problem, you basically have to use the power director clutch (The hi-low-neutral lever) as if it were the foot clutch, thus putting it in neutral would be like stepping on the clutch, but now the PTO will keep on turning. Even if you are stopped dead, you can feather the PD clutch back into either high or low to resume ground speed without ever touching the foot clutch. The way I look at it is like this: When doing PTO work, the foot clutch is now your PTO clutch, and the PD is your ground speed clutch. Also, be aware of the fact that PD clutches have a tendency to drag in neutral before the tractor is warmed up, and also, if you are running a rotary mower, and need to make a panic stop, put the PD in neutral. If you just step on the foot clutch, the inertia of the spinning mower blades will keep the tractor moving. Sounds complicated, but after getting used to it, you'll like it. At least I do. With my first Allis,A D 19, I hated it at first, but now, using the PD is just as natural as the foot clutch. Using the PD is even a little better than the foot clutch, as it is a multiple disc wet clutch, and the foot clutch is dry. Another safety note, this happened to a guy I knew: Always put tranny in neutral when you get off with the engine running! This guy had left the tranny in gear, and just put the PD in neutral. When he went to get back on, he used the PD handle to pull himself up, pulled it forward, and ran himself over. He did live through it, but developed a strong dislike for the orange tractors. Mr. CB, Among tractor collectors, AC people are rumored to all be conservative, many frugal, some cheap, and a few, damn cheap. If you take an average of the recommendations above, multiply it by Pi, and divide by the square root of 8.75, you get a certified value of $1964.75. Or you could use your best judgment.

haha well alright thanks for that. I know everyone likes to get a great deal. i figure the engine rebuild and clutch has to be worth something then the general condition of the tractor. The response seems to be get it and that it will provide me a decent tractor for what i want. of course im not going to walk up to him with $2500 in my hand. Guess i will start with a haggler price of $1700 to see what he says. Thanks everyone for all your help and opinions.
One more question ...... The tractor is about an hour away from me. Is there a cover that could be removed to inspect the condition of the 4th gear?

Side plate, you may not want to look in there cause all the gears are going to show shifting wear. It is fifty years old and still works I would just go for it. Fred

Thanks for the advice robert. thats very true. I might drive up there this weekend and take a look at it and make him and offer and see what he says. Then see if i will come back. Just thought if I took the trailer it would save a trip if i wanted it. The only vehicle i have to drive is my 3/4 truck
