Planted some Jimmy Red corn, the plan was to grind, mash and brew it, but the entire field has tall strong stalks but not a single ear to be found. It hasn't tasseled yet, got planted late due to rain, the seed was two years old as raccoons got last years crop and I had enough leftover to plant this year. It was dry for a while after I planted it but not a drought by any means and it is bottom ground. I just never experienced this before, any answers or ideas?

I would wait to see the tasseling.
Do you have a plan for ground this fall? Like a cover crop that has certain ‘window’ to get in the ground? |

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

.
Jimmy Red gets eight to ten feet tall. Just be patient with it. It will tassel first and then send up the ear. Have you done the mash before or are both processes new? General advice is only do one new task at a time. This forum may help, or so I'm told: https://homedistiller.org/forum/ Another option is get oak smoking chips to put in a mason jar and fill with the bottom shelf cheapest vodka you can find. Wait some time. Then whiskey to bourbon depending on surface area to volume and time. It's a complicated mathematical equation... Lol. Good luck! . Edited by jvin248 - Yesterday at 6:20pm |

I’ve got watermelon and cantaloupe intermingled now, last year, after the great raccoon heist, I disc it up and planted turnips. |

JW in MO, Sounds like you might have it planted it too thick? Jimmy Red Corn is recommended to have one plant every 12” within a row on 36” wide rows.
You did say it was planted late. So it will flower late. Maybe you also have high deer pressure, if so then I’d planted it thick too & then let deer eat/thin it?? How did you plant it? What is it’s emerged spacings? Regardless, it should flower(ear silks then tassels). It just delayed. |

32” rows, however I don’t know if some of the seed didn’t germinate or my planter messes up but leaning more toward planter as it’s more prevalent on one row. Spacing maybe 6,” but last year was no issue. Patience may be my biggest hurdle, got to leave town for a week, that will help |

.
Six inch spacing is way too tight for heirloom corn. GMO/hybrid and popcorn produces at 6 inches. Vertical leaves. Corn emerges and looks around by V3-V6 to figure out competition. Then it carefully calculates the ear kernel rows and the length of the ear. At six inch spacing the stalks just tassel and put no ears on. Silage corn. Been there. Stalks near skips will produce well. You could try pulling stalks on a few rows to give you 12 inch spacing. Pull weaker or shorter plants. I'm using 20 inch rows after 30 inch and 15 inch trials. Then 9-12 inch seed spacing. . |
