what is a good motor build up for a 88 oliver . i hear chevy pistons of 4-1/8 or  JD pistons . would like to find one for tractor pulling but would like around 70-80 hp and still be able to use it as a farm tractor.

I've heard that a Buick engine (not sure of size) will bolt right up to the transmission on the old 77 and 88 Olivers. I was told that is why a lot of Oliver pullers have the side shields on their pullers.

Ask on the Oliver section of ytmag.com. I think maybe a 283 or 310 from a newer tractor is what you're after. Nice thing about Oliver is they used the same basic engine mounting design from the 60 on up. Makes it easy to swap engines.

310 works good, but alot of pulling groups won't allow them in the 77 & 88's. They call them 7 main engines meaning they had 7 mains.  You can tell by looking at outside if it is a 7 main engine.  Gingerich engine makes some nice ones.  They are around Plain city OH

If you are going to use the tractor to plow or fit ground as part of the use after pulling you will want to have a mild over all plan and then pick parts.  If you put the engine from a 1600, 1650 with an over bore kit in a fleetline 88 then bolt the side pannels fast you will have close to what you are after. You go much higher than that you will be stressing the transmissino on 8 to 10 hour feild work day after day if you step up the tool size to match the HP..

1100 masey engine is what most use and some use the cummins

Easy to do, forget the GM stuff, that is a hard way.   We hammered 100+ pto hp out of a Super 77 and kept it togeather for years,  toss the weights, get it LIGHT!!! 
Engine,  you will need 4010 Deere gasser rods and pistons, may or may not need to get some crank work. A Super has larger journal diameters,  and just for "grins and giggles" look at what the gasoline engine used in an 1100 MF is,  302 CID and with a good machinist IT WILL DROP RIGHT IN AN 88 BLOCK,  HINT, HINT.   If you only want 75 pto hp and 302 kits from a Super 99 gas or a 990 diesel will drop right in.
OLIVER Fleetlines are very, very easy to "crank up", and hard to stop when "right".
