What brand do you prefer?? Gas, wood, etc. Im gonna find something to put in the toy hauler and head for Arizona next fall, depends on moms health if we can go. But plans are in place. Guess I outta think about eating down there. In sure I won't be able to buy the great corn fed Iowa beef down there. Just thinking about chow down there. Surely find something decent besides rattle snake steaks and armadillo hams.

Can't give you a certain brand, as I built my own. Although I can tell you mine is similar in design to Xtreme BBQ brand. It is an over/under grill/smoker. It distributes the smoke and heat more evenly throughout the smoke chamber than an offset smoker does.

we buy a $100 charbroil gas and replace every 2-3 years. works great, wife a great cook.

have had them all, right now I prefer an electric box smoker, and a gas flat top (camp chef) grill with a small gas grill for charring. with a gasser, you have heat the fastest. and can control the heat the fastest. with electric...set it and forget it. just gotta know your times. times differ when it's hot or cold outside. I can smoke on the grills with any wood added near the flame. the small grill (any $20. one) provides a good char on the meat if you like that. do I have a lot of different cooking equipment? yes...I do...but that's the fun of cooking outside for me...just to see what all I can do with different meats. I also use cast iron pots in different applications. can use them on any type heat...charcoal works the best with the cast iron and trivet.

also...any cheaper grill like Trace gets will cook just as good if not better than those great big honkin grills that take any type fuel. gas/charcoal/electric/wood.

Tom, I had a small cast aluminum propane grill that I bought at Camping World when we were in the Rving lifestyle Legs folded up and stored nicely. Less than a $100 at the time. Don't remember the brand but it lasted a long time.
BTW, if you go to Quartzsite, I'ii be expecting a visit as you pass through the valley!! Armand

Bradley makes a portable propane that uses 1lb tanks, pucks, and breaks down small with a tent type enclosure and metal racks. Have never used Bradley but have heard they are pretty good and easy to use.

Table top gas grills are good to take on trips. ---We use one here on the back porch, because it don't take up much room. Used to take with me to the farm to make hot coffee and a burger or hot dog.

Best I can tell,, there's lots difference between jus grillin and 'smoking'...
Grill gets food cooked outside just kinda like cookin inside...smokin takes several hours at a low heat setting... |

years ago, that tourist trap "RAWHIDE" outside of Scottsdale always served NE beef, prolly changed by mow...but they also served rattle snake and it was really good!

We replaced our propane grill with a pellet grill/smoker made by Pitboss. We love it! I can smoke ribs, birds, brisket etc on it just fine but the Pitboss also has a sliding cover over the flame box that when opened up gives direct flame perfect for searing steaks. With it closed it is more convect heat and is nearly impossible to burn anything. It is easy to start and seems to heat up fast as well. I always swore I'd never buy one as my propane grill was easy and fast when I needed it. Well when the propane grill rusted out I found this Pitboss on sale at a local menards and now I can't imagine going back to anything else.

![]() My sister bought a pellet grill smoker. They been spending winters down in deep South Texas and she uses it a lot down there, and really likes it. All their snowbird neighbors rave about her smoked brisket. Most of the ones I have seen are 3 times the price of a gas grill though. |

Well,,Shameless,,your right in that those that do buy them hi dollar Grills like the Big Green Egg DO like them cause I have looked at one close and they are very well made and the quality is very obvious throughout. The inlet air control is very precise and should make for some looooooong,,,,loooooong cooks such as Briskett,,,,,,,,,,

Old gal and me has got a show to do this weekend. After that we are gonna take a day and head for camping World in Council Bluffs. I'D like to see the Big Boy non operational steam engine that's in a park while we are there. Ill check out those short legged grills while I am there. I need to talk to them about a steering stabalizer on both the wanna be motor home and the actual motor home.

I know several folks that have them pellet grill/smokers, they also love them for what they do, however they do complain about the price of the pellets, and 2 of them complained about humidity getting to the pellets if left in the holding box. they swell and then don't feed well, they said they then hafta dig out the whole box clean, then those pellets are wasted. they said after they cool down after using, they gotta put them inside the house to keep the humidity away. I did use a pellet grill once, I liked it, but didn't like the price of the pellets at the time...guess I was thinking too much on the wood I have at home to use up first. Tom, camping world has numerous grills/smokers on display, but are more expensive to buy there unless they are having a big sale. but you'll be able to see the different ones and might help make a decision on what you like!

I believe it's the Pitboss 820. And shameless we store our grill outside on the porch, we've done it like that since we bought it almost three years ago. I bought the cover for it and have absolutely no problems with the pellets. We even store the open bags in the detached garage and never have problems with them. The only complaint I have is when real cold outside it will not work as the auger that feeds the pellets must have a grease in the motor that gets too stiff for it to turn. Last year I smoked the Thanksgiving turkey on it and the night before I needed the grill I had to let it sit in the house to warm everything up. Once I was ready to start it I just wheeled it outside and she fired right up and ran for hours without a problem. |

![]() This is the pellet smoker/grill that I bought a while back. $400 at Mac's hardware. One of the things I like about it is that it has a water pan to keep the food moist. But IMHO, the best part is wood flavor without having to babysit it to maintain constant temperature. I am a far cry from a professional food smoker, so it works great for me. I've cured some turkeys and smoked them, and they are awesome! I guess that I haven't become too frugal yet, to buy a bag of pellets occasionally. A person can grill anything on it, too and add a little smoke for a delicious little extra touch. Darrel |
