There are a couple of places with numbers but nothing that I have found determine what yellow goes with what year or machine. Unlike the oranges that are well defined.

i worked in the Fiat-Allis construction division from 1977-87. There were probably 3 different colors of "yellow" used in that time. Early 70s were a real bright shinny yellow. Toward the end it was a dull, brownish yellow. All from the factory.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Tom, I took a protected part off mine and compared it to a color book at NAPA. Color is 55A #9876 Yellow. That is what is written on can. HTH Tracy Martin

Is that on your HD4? All the HD4's I've seen have been that brownish tint yellow. On the H3's, earlier produced machines have been more yellow to a yellow-orange. Might not be original though.

When I started in 78 the colors on Michigan line had changed to a brownish tint and they said it was to because some ingredient was creating a health or environment problem. I don't think the industrial companies were too hung up on subtle variations in paint color, probably rebid the supply contracts whenever they felt like it.

Take a look at this site. Our AC industrial equipment is painted DAR 81985, which matches the "Allis Chalmers Earth Removing Equipment yellow" listed in the information

Sorry to be so long in answering your question.
Yes, I'm inquiring so I can do some work on the HD4. (Pictures a little further down in the log). Someone prior painted it and covered all the decals except the two HD4's on the side panels. I'm not planning an immediate whole paint job, but there are some rust spots that I want to clean up and protect. I've gotten some good information. Now I have to fine someone local who can get the paint for me. I'm sure they won't stock it. Thanks! Tom Westerfield |
