There was an update a person could do to make an old Gehl baler start a bale easier. I have a 1600 model but I believe the update pertained to any of the older Gehl round balers. Does anyone know what that was and better yet have pictures? I think it had to do with welding something so that the belts were held slightly loose when the bale first started.

Lonn, I had a Gehl 1465 baler that I got a kit from the dealer to put what was called a "lagging belt" on the packing roller that originally was a smooth steel roller, and these rubber belting material helped grab the hay off of the pickup. It still wanted to jam up if pushed too hard. It seems to me that you could put something in to keep the top slide from tightening to belts too much. Dale

Thanks, I read on some old archived forum that you weld angle irons somewhere to keep belts slightly loose then the bale would build and naturally tighten the belts. I'm unsure where these would be welded.

I fixed this issue on my Gehl by replacing it with a John Deere!!!! And before you say I spent big $$$, last year I spend over $1000 on all new belts for the Gehl which did NOTHING to help, and I spent $1200 on the JD baler! For once in a blue moon, I guess I got a little lucky, though now trying to get a bearing replaced on the JD.
Seriously though, is there a scuffer belt and is it in good shape on the bottom roller that pops up? That's about the only thing that helps.....some.....

Never owned a Gehl, I assume its a rounder. On my hesston, manual says to go across a few windrows, to start bales better...

BTW here is what I found on the net so far dealing with this issue but the details are lacking to me.

Now I found this from the same website archives "Gehl made an improvement on those later. My 1450 didn't have it,but the
dealer told me how to fix it. The 1475 has this improvement built in
stock.
What it ammounts to is,you have to have the belts looser when you start a bale. Right at the front of the belt rack,up on top, weld a piece of angle iron just ahead of the front of it on each side where it slides on the top of the baler. Drill a half inch hole in each one and put a piece of threaded rod on each side with a nut on either side of the angle iron so you can back that rack off and loosen the belts in slippery hay. This gives you some room in the chamber to get more hay in to it so it has more hay to start." I wish I could see a pic of this improvement but I think I got an idea on what he's talking about. |

The 1600 is old like 1980 or so. Hesston is a good baler too. My uncle had an old IH about the same age (built by Hesston) and it did good but my Dad and my uncle sometimes would bale together in the same field and the old 1500 Dad had could pack more hay in each bale vs the old IH. Not that it would make any difference to me in my small operation. The old Hesston had fewer bearing issues than the old Gehl for sure.

I should have taken a picture of what I meant last night......Though I didn't know your model number, and I think mine is different. What I was referring to, is the roller that rotates counter to start a bale, ours is wrapped in a belt with some scuffer riveted to it. Instead I flogged on that bearing until 9:00 again, but do finally have it off.
It is AMAZING how effortlessly that ancient JD starts a bale. AMAZING I tell ya!

Mine is a 1600 but Dad never had trouble with his first 1500 which is pretty much the same baler. The second 1500 was shot when he bought it so it was never good but this 1600 has seen very little hay in comparison.
