o=k...so ya'll know I bought a red tractor cuz i'm gonna be a farmer again! my question is....all my PTO equipment is 540 and this tractor has the small 1000 PTO. I called a dealer and the shop dude says to pull this PTO shaft out, turn it around and re-install....like the AC 7000 series tractors do. I pulled the shaft and there is no 540 splined shaft on the other side. so....to run the air planter I went and got an adaptor, then fought with it as it wouldn't stay connected, kept coming off the tractor....found out it was defective...made in India....go figger! went to CASE dealer and they took an adaptor off one of their machines in the lot, they didn't have one on the shelf, I appreciated what they did. if I would buy another shaft to replace the 1000 shaft with a 540 shaft, would that 540 shaft still turn at 1000 RPM's??? since I think it would have the same splined sprocket on the new shaft as the present one. I dunno. the shop foreman from my CASE dealer is gone all week. planting took alot longer than i had antisapated this year! think i'll rebuild my AC 600 planter for next year!

No, the 540/1000 small shaft engages to different gears on the inside to change speed, like the AC 185 / 200's do on 2 spd PTO.
Is shaft you got from dlr a 540/1000 in one or just 540?

the adaptor I got is a 540 that slips onto the 1000 splines, has a set screw that I found out I have to keep screwing back tight every hour or so. wonder if I should replace the set screw with a bolt and a lock nut?

the 1000 shaft has a small sprocket between the back plate and a bearing. it's held in with a snap ring.

I think that there should be a 540 shaft in hiding somewhere on the tractor. If you pull out the 1000 shaft, like you did, put in the 540, it should engage different gears internally, and give you the 540 that you need. Darrel

Some of them the other shaft pushes a internal button that changes gear. That's the way my neighbors newer new holland works.

It might help to state what model "red tractor" you bought. It's hard to tell from here.

How does a 'PTO Adapter' change a 1,000 RPM tractor to a 540 RPM tractor? G |

I’d be upgrading planters. PTO and planter shouldn’t be in the same sentence.

I suggest gong to the IH forum on YT,lot of IH folks there.Sort of interesting note I had a Long 910/Zetor 8011 that to change over from 1000 to 540 had to take the PTO out of the back and swap with the other one under the belly of the tractor.

right.. there is no EXTERNAL adaptor that is going to change speed.. just adapt to a different size pto drive shaft spline... You need to go INTERNAL and drive off a different gear ratio... the NEW shaft will be longer / shorter , and run off a different speed gear.

no Steve...the bearing is behind the sprocket on the 1000 that we pulled out. and the dealer I bought it from got me an owners manuel, and when they tried to mail it to me, the post office returned it to them saying they can't mail a box to a PO box!! BUNK! I get boxes all the time to my PO box. I called them back and told them to UPS or FED EX it to me! still waiting for it! 1000 and 540 shafts are different sizes. thank you all for your responses !

I asked my old neighbor about PTO shafts on his 2007 CNH Magnum 180 tractor. Says it came with 3; 540, 1000 small and 1000 large. one is installed in tractor the other 2 and extra retainers are in a plastic case, says looks like a little toolbox.
He only uses 1000 large so not sure how it changes speeds.
