I work for a vegetable grower with a JD 2840. It steers but there is a lot of play in the system which causes the tractor to wobble when you are trying to travel in a straight line. I have checked all bushings and tie rod ends and the problem appears to be in the steering motor. I can turn the steering wheel 180 degrees or more before the main arm starts to move. The local John Deere dealer is of no help. They say they can’t fix it. They told me to buy a new tractor.
I purchased a reconditioned unit from All States, but it does the same thing. I know this problem has been on here before. Just trying again. Thanks
for any advice and help. See Video link. Edited by ibleedorange - 28 Feb 2017 at 2:35pm |

I'm certainly no expert on these but I would first check the preload on the front wheel bearings to make sure all is good there. I think I would next jack up both front wheels and see if could tell if any slop exists outside of the steering motor. It may be that the steering motor is the culprit and needs a rebuild.

Bearings were a little loose. Tightened them up. Everything to the steering motor seems tight.
Thanks |

Add some toe in and SLOW DOWN !
Is this a hydrostatic steering or hydraulic assist. Is it possible the cylinder is getting air in it from a cavitating pump or bad suction hose? |
