  Anyone running a new 2011 GM, Ford or Dodge diesel pickup yet?    Ordered a new Ram 3500 Cummins back in july,  Did all the research on all brands and on the new emissions and the Cummins was the only one that wouldn't need the DEF (urea).  dealer called today and said truck just came in but i had to wait till they got some DEF as the truck wont run without it. I asked him well what kind of motor did they stick in this thing? It is a Cummins, but i tell you i sure dont have any warm fuzzy feelings knowing that i have one of the first Cummins built using this?

I wondered about that and was told the Ram cab/chassis was going to get DEF first, probably those built since Jan 2010.

I've test driven both the 2011 GM Duramax and the new Ford with their new engine. Both are very quite a rocket of power. I really like the electronic engine exhaust brake. DEF is going to be a fact life and has been used in Europe for a few years. I realy think the engines will run better and they are claiming much better fuel economy. Same goes for the heavy highway trucks. With DEF there much less EGR. There should be no problem with DEF availability. I'm actually glad I waited to order a new truck except for the price.

If DEF cuts out EGR or even lowers its use substantially I'm sure you'll have a much more reliable engine.  The 6.4L Powerstroke (new one is 6.7L, built by Ford, not Navistar) had 2 EGR coolers just to try and cool it and they fail constantly. The 6.0L before it was plagued by EGR failures as well.  So far so good on the new 6.7L.  Have not seen one come back for anything other than oil change and a couple jugs of DEF.

I took one of those new fords for drive, lots of power, but the looks of the new front end and after the whole 6 and 6.4 liter fiasco, those trucks need a couple years on the road before i would have faith in a Ford again.  It was so crammed under the hood, hard to tell whats what, does the new Ford engine even have EGR?

I have an 07 GMC 2500HD with the Duramax....first year for emmisions...this thing is a tow pig, but its also a fuel HOG....I average 11.5 to 12.7 all the time....best I ever did was 15.6 on a trip.....its disgusting.....all in the name of the environment....doesnt put out emmisions, but depletes the yearly oil supply.

"For the 2010 model year, Chrysler has announced that it will use two different technologies to meet the regulated NOx levels. Since 2007, the Cummins diesel engines installed in Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 models have met the 2010 standards using an exhaust gas recirculation system along with a special catalyst that uses precious metals to scrub NOx gases. Larger Ram trucks with diesel engines will join GM and Ford in using a liquid consisting of urea and deionized water beginning next year.

This Diesel Exhaust Fluid will be stored in a tank and injected as a mist into the exhaust. Due to the high temperatures present, the fluid will turn into ammonia and will help break down the harmful NOx gases. Look at the shop forum.  All I will add is that they run nice, but the price of the def and catalyst section, is pushing 2000+.  The emissions should be warranted for 100k under federal law.  But after that?  Only time will tell, see how long they stand up to salt spray as well.
