Jenn wants me to buy a newer truck. I will sell my old work truck and my GMC will become my work truck . I just don’t have time to mess with the old Ford right now.
I’ve been looking and first off the adds are full of diesels that all have problems. These don’t have the miles my GMC has and I’m talking about Duramaxes and power strokes. I’m not looking at Dodges. I’m sold on GM and want a 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 6.0. I can’t believe how many miles most 5 year old trucks have these days. People sure drive a lot. And the prices are scary. I’m afraid I’ve lost touch with today’s prices. Somewhere down the line the GM 6.0 trucks started getting much better mpg. Does anybody remember what year? |

No wonder Jenn said you could only buy one of them Allis Tractors. Trucks, even used junk these days are outrageously priced. Good luck

Pickups became the next gen cars. The Fords all have issues after the 7.3, some can be fixed others no. Dodge is now using the Mercedes engine lines so Cummins will be soon gone for parts except the aftermarket as well.
I am no longer looking for a pickup, all too many are now just junk, IF and emphatically note IF I buy another wagon will be a used class 7, no more getting by with a ton truck as they just won't do without big repair expenses anymore. Light brakes, almost heavy enough drive train, low mileage tires, over glorified station wagons with a load box behind. |

I see 7.3 power strokes with 200000 to 250000 miles with the transmission out or need pump or need injectors or need something. They don’t run and asking $7000.00 same with Duramaxes. I believe a gasser will outlast a diesel these days. I believe the cost to keep a gasser going compared to a diesel isn’t even close. I’m way to old and fat to be cool so a gasser it will be. |

A few years back I found a 7 year old 1ton dually diesel Chevy, 4 door long bed, had just over 100k miles for 23k. I had to add the gooseneck hitch but no repairs needed. Wasn't paying 50 thousand for one, kept looking, it was on Craigslist, for sale by a Chevy dealership. I had put so many injectors, egr valves, etc., on my old Ford I didn't want to wrench on another one, and haven't. I really wanted a GMC but wasn't willing to risk not finding it when this one popped up. As long as you aren't in a hurry, something will come up.

Thad, I have been looking, can buy a Freightliner 10-12 year old Business Class 4 door with Cummins or small Cat for less than $30,000, usually around 100-150,000 miles, will have Auto trans, air brakes, tilt hood and 22.5 rubber, would last any of us forever just NOT 4x4.
Would be Pre-Tier 3 and NO DEF as well fuel economy for a Class 7 chassis. Edited by DMiller - 27 Apr 2019 at 4:59pm |

I know you said you're not looking at Dodge but I'm tickled pink with mine. 2016 2500 Tradesman with the 6.4 hemi. Mine has a 6 speed auto but you can get the 8 speed auto in the new gas burners. Was a diesel only option until this year. And the 6.4 makes 420hp. Truck rides great to. The Tradesman is the work truck trim. Vinyl seats and rubber floor mats.

Duracraps and powerjokes with low miles and problems..... gee who would have tought that was possible. A v-8 is gona be problems no matter what brand it is. Example, v-8s are no longer used in heavy trucks of any brand or engine make for heavy duty trucks. Any used truck with a computer controled engine will be nothing but problems. Why do you think they were traded?

Ran Dodge Cummins for company, 3/4 2WD dbl. cab short bed and never had any issues. Fords we brought in had many issues, 3/4 and 1 ton duallies 4WD. Mostly a/c issues kept them at the dealers for far too long and we also had plenty of brake issues.
When diesels were at their peak, I started looking for a GM 2WD cab & 1/2 short bed 6.0 for a farm truck as service rates on diesels kept climbing. Found a 2007 6.0 GMC with 135K on it in 2015, former company truck and the company had all service records. Picked up from a kid whose brother let him in on his company's blind auction and thought he would make a killin by flipping it. He didn't, I put a CM bed with hidden hitch and LED's on it, grill gaurd and that's it since I've owned it. Does not have the big Allison tranny but so far so good and she just hit 200K. Was hittin 16/17 for mileage empty on the last trip to upstate NY last year and does not do bad with either the cattle or flatbed gooseneck behind her in tow/haul. The Cummins would walk up hills like a striped a$$ monkey pulling 13 round bales and the HEMI was surprisingly stout as well but, that 6.0 has impressed me for sure and I would not hesitate to buy another one if needed.I'm fine doing 65 mph with the 185 or one of the D17's on the gooseneck and smile when a Cummins or Duramax flies by me doing 80 with a loaded trailer. If the truck continues to hold up like she has, she'll get a crate engine as I've come to like that 6.0 that much.

Thad,
Trucks! Humm. I like my Ford 6.3 diesel, but might buy a Ford 6.0 gas if I need to get another truck someday. The new truck costs are not easy to swallow. I chose to get a used one this time due to the cost of new. Most of it is good on this used Ford. Pulls good with a load! Good luck in your search. Good that the wife is on board too!
Regards, Chris |

The last time the dash worked on my GMC it said 312000 miles. It still runs strong. I put a transmission in it at 230000.. I bought it from my dad who bought it new and pulled a 24’ stock trailer. It stayed hooked to that trailer until the day I bought it.
It’s always got 12 mpg and always leaked a little antifreeze. It’s been a good truck. Before it I had a 94 GMC with a 4.3 v6 that I sold with 330000 miles on it. I prefer a GMC over a Chevy because I like the grills better. |

Well I have been on the fence for several years and just shake my head at the prices of pickups but now that I'm retired it has firmly pushed me in the "I don't care if I ever get a new truck" side of the fence. They do small real nice though. 249k on the clock and runs like a top. Thinking about what my friend said to do and to put a stoker kit in the engine when it's time.

My '99 has 340,000 on it, rust is taking over but I almost put 5K on it last year so as a farm truck it is fine.

I like the grills better too Thad, my GMC was a 05 and said I'd never have a Chevy with a cat eyes grill. In Feb I found an 07 2500HD Chevy with 83K and a 5 spd manual and I love it! Can't see the grill from behind the steering wheel. GMC had 238K and was trouble free but I never cared for the automatic...Harvey

My 2007 GMC 6.0 is a rocket, but burns fuel like a rocket. Most powerful truck I have had in a long time. I believe it has to do with the gearing, not sure.
But is has a big gas tank for a reason. 10 mpg most of the time, 12 at best... From the web site that tracks the best mileage, for GM's, it the 2015 1500 with a 5.3. 22.5 miles per gallon. I just picked up a old GMC truck with a 6.5 turbo. Going to give that a try. My 07 is rusty and going down the road. Soon. Carl |
