because i have lots of free internet time at work, i was browsing the deere, cnh, and agco sites looking at new tractors. a couple of the sites had areas where you could compare specs with other brands.....so i decided, "what the hell, i have time to kill.....let's dream a little." anyway, i was kinda noticing that massey and deere had slightly better numbers in engine displacement, hydraulic flow and engine rpm was lower for max hp.  anyway.....i'm in no way trying to say they are better on paper, i was just noticing the trend w/in the brands. so anyway, is there anything to that? does deere and massey have a "better" tractor (i was shopping in the 50hp FWA utility size) than case/new holland?
once the wife is out of school and making money again, maybe.....just maybe i can be somewhat serious about tractor shopping, but for now it's just window shopping. as of right now, if it were your money.....what tractor would be tops on your list? would any base it the listed numbers/specs.....does a certain company have a better build quality....or would you just decide to go with whatever dealer gave you the best price on the tractor in the category your were shopping in?

I have been "shopping" for a 50-60 HP 4wd loader tractor to use around the barns. In my environment a wet clutch/power reverser is necessary as I want the clutch to last more than a couple of years. In my judgement, the best buy for the money is a Kubota 6040-7040. The Massey 2600 HD line is based on an old technology CaseIH chassis and the JD low end 5000 series is about the same age technology, no power reversers and the MF has bull gear rear axles. I just got a quote from a Kubota dealer..6040,cab,4wd,loader, power reverser-wet engine clutch, dual rear SCVs... for 37K, cash deal.  As tempting as this is ..believe it or not I'm gravitating toward a second AC 175D. I have had one since 1980 that is used daily..feed, clean, etc... , it finally needs some elongated shop time. Somehow I can't see myself using anything else but the old girl after all these years...you just can't beat that manual power director/wet clutch for busket work.  Maybe I'm just gettin' old and resistant to change.

You are correct JD and MF typically get same HP with Bigger engine and Less RPM.  WHen I am selling New MF Tractors we stress Engine Size, Net Engine HP, and Weight.  JD is bad about rating tractors on Gross Engine HP... Tested with NO oil pump, water pump, alternator, or any other load on engine.

I've said it before, I like my masseys. Good cheap H.P. in the utility tractor range.
