This is my first post on this forum and I just wanted to check in and say hello. I've been hanging around here for a while, but never registered until today. I may need to call on the many knowledgeable members here in the near future as I hope to begin restoring or at least reviving one of our tractors that is an Allis. In 1981 my grandfather purchased a WD45 with an AC160 rotary mower, subsoiler, and a No 11B harrow for $1,000. I actually believe that this is a WD that has been re-powered with a wd45 engine or a 45 crank. Unfortunately; he died a few years back, before his time. The tractor sat in the barn for a while after his death. When we tried to use it for whatever reason it had no power and would die out. A few years later we tried to get it going again with no luck. We, my dad and I, run a Ford 4000 diesel now. But I just hate seeing that blue thing pull orange equipment. I'd love to get "Allis" going again as that machine holds great sentimental value and memories of a man that meant a lot to me. It was a very good machine; like my dad always said...."if we can get a chain around it the Allis will pull it." Thanks |

Well first off, WELCOME! You came to the right place! I can guarantee that you will get all the help you need to get that WD running and then some right here. For starters, I'll try a little bit. I'm more of a guy who knows a lot about the B, but if you could answer some questions, I'm sure we could narrow it down a lot faster to help you get this thing out of the barn.
Does it run at all right now? Does it start and die, or die a few minutes after running it? Does it die under special conditions (Pulling a load, just sitting there, in gear traveling)? My first guess is that it is the magneto or a fuel problem. Since it was sitting a while you may want to take the fuel line off and blow it out with some compressed air to get any rust or dirt that may have gotten down in there after it was run after sitting. You may also want to clean and/or replace the screen in the float bowl for the same reason. Something in the mag may have also gone bad while it was sitting. May want to get that checked out. Just a warning ahead of time, magnetos are finniki and need to be timed after they are taken off. May want to check the fuel flow first and see if that fixes the problem before taking the mag off. It could also be possible that the carb is gummed up a little bit. All these are mostly simple fixes that can easily be explained here on the forum. Don't worry, we'll get you fixed up in no time! Again, welcome!

Hey guys! Welcome to the best forum in the known universe! Glad to see more GA boys coming in. I'm originally from Madison Co., about 15 miles from Athens. Been here in Elberton for almost 15 years now.
I am more oriented towards Cs. We have 4 of them in the family. A lot of the common problems are with fuel ,timing, and spark. I would check my fuel flow first. Check out the inside of the tank. If it's rusty or cruddy, take it off, throw about 6' of chain in there, and shake it around with some rust remover., Shake it in all different directions until your arms give out, then put it down, come back later, and shake it some more. Get all that crud out of there, or it will haunt you.(I know from experience.LOL!). Next, blow out and clean or replace fuel line from settling bowl to carb. Then take the carb off. I recommend soaking in a pail of carb cleaner. Works better if there's varnish and crud built up. Clean carb up and make sure any orifices are clear by blowing compressed air through. Check float to make sure it's not leaking, and check float level. It really does help to have a manual. Someone here may be able to point you in the right direction, or can help you download one.
After eliminating fuel, go to the mag. Just be careful. Mags are very touchy, as has already been said. Cleaning and setting the points gap is fairly simple, and can eliminate a lot of problems. Make sure the rotor button is pointing at #1 plug wire position on rotor cap with engine turned to timing mark on flywheel. If not, reset timing.(manual helps here too. ) Check for spark on new plugs. Fire should be crisp and blue. If that looks good, you need to move on to compression. Testers are inexpensive, and will help eliminate guess work. Not sure what compression should be. Manual will tell you. Pull valve cover and check valve clearances and pushrod conditions also. My C had one bent pushrod on #1 cyl. Caused me some grief til I found it. Was easy to fix, and cleared up pesky problem. Just take one step at a time. Should get you up and running. Let us know how it's going, and welcome again! Dream. Edited by DREAM - 24 Mar 2010 at 9:40pm |

Sell one of the Cubs instead! You'll be amazed at the difference in power the C has. And hydraulics too! I bet that C can pull one of those Cubs in half! Just messing. Cubs are nice little machines, very handy. Especially for mowing. Can't remeber if that mag has a condenser. I'm assuming it does. Might want to change that, and make sure the kill switch wire isn't grounding to something. Also had a problem with mine not turning the rotor button. Someone had left out the gasket behind the points cover. Gears weren't meshing. I've seen the terminal for the kill switch tang get corroded and ground out the mag. C was the first tractor(or any machine) that I ever drove. Just partial to them I guess. IB is a neat machine, and kinda rare. I'd hold onto that one. Guy named Eldon on here has an IB crane. Neat machine.

The B and C will literally run circles around the cub doing any task. I'd sell the cub's. They are under-powered and over-rated. You'd make more money selling a Cub then what you'd get selling the C and you'll still have the better tractor in the end.

well i got all the stuff for a cub and that was one of the first tractors i ever plowed on. i have been looking for a A/C model B that my maternal grandfather owned. i got the JD A that my paternal grandfather owned and would love to have the B also but i know that it is a long shot t0 ever find it. my uncle has the farmall 140 that my grandfather owned so there is no hope of getting it but he takes good care of it so i guess it is okay. i will probably sell one of my cubs one day after i get the IB fixed. just dont have enough room for all my treasure!

This was always a good running and well maintained machine. After that day it sorta bummed me out and I was left feeling like it died along with my grandfather.
Thanks for the warm welcome. I've lived in GA my entire life. Grew up in Covington, and now live in Commerce. I still have family in Covington. Edited by OrangePowerGA - 25 Mar 2010 at 10:28am |

Orange power try taking you plugs out andsee what kind of compression you have .If you don't have a compression trester put your thumb over the hole and see if it draws in and blows out when somone cranks it over.I have had sticky valves on ones that sat for a long time, also check carb and coil

Welcome, Orange Power and dirtyredcub. Glad to have some more from Georgia here on the Forum. You will find plenty of good advice here on just about anything Allis plus most anything else. Have you checked in to the Gathering of The Orange (GOTO) in Gray, TN on April 23 - 25? It will be a very good show and well worth seeing. You will get to meet a lot of good Alllis people. I have a friend just up the road that has a few of the little Cubs. He and some "red" friends were at his place last weekend having a great time. I live just north of Athens but have a B and a WD in Washington, GA.

Welcome to the Unofficial Allis Forum!! Yes, you will get all the help you need here. You have a project that is PRICELESS!! Fixing a family tractor.
Since the tractor has set for some time it will require some work. The lack of power can be from many things. Cheap solution, water in the fuel system. A good carb and gasoline tank and line cleaning would help. Don't forget the settlement bowl. More costly valves and further into the engine.
Don't forget the ignition system. They last but can be damaged with non-use.
In any event Welcome again!
Don't hesitate to ask. Everyone here will be delighted to be of assistance.
Good Luck!

Hey Orangepower, I grew up on the Jackson/Madison county line! Folks have a Commerce address! They live in Rogers Community.I was just over there yesterday. I plan to be at the Big Iron crank-up myself, and hope to make it to Tenn. for the GOTO. Give me a shout out if you want to meet up. 498-0363. Mr. Hubert, you should head on over to Bowman for the Crank-up. Not far from you, and a pretty good little show. Not too many tractors, but still a lot of fun.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I do have what I need for a proper compression test. I guess a carb rebuild is in order and could only help.
Thanks for all the input.
