I brought home my dad's old New Idea 290 haybine on Thursday night. Greased everything up and oiled the chains and disconnected the sickle and everything other then the sickle is loose and working on it. From looking on the internet tonite, I have learned that it is the same as the Ford 535 as well as it was badged by other manufacturers. My questions so far is where do you all go to buy sickle sections as the one that is one there is really rusted and a bunch of sickles are rusted through from it sitting low to the ground over the last 25 years outside.
Also, is the short section of pto shaft that couples to the tractor supposed to extend in and out? It is really rusted from sitting over the years and hanging down to the ground. I took it off tonite and it's soaking in a bath of electrolysis right now so hopefully I can get it all loosened up and working good. Then all I have to do is get the sickle working again and she should be ready to cut. Not bad for something my dad thought was just scrap.

Chuck, no help for you on the sickle sections, but on the pto shaft....it'd make sense for there to be a section of the drive train between the tractor and the mower that has "give" in it. Sounds like that pto section would be it - does it appear to be a single shaft or is one end inserted into the other?

It's hard to tell if the short section slips. My dad recalls that it did but he is 80 and told me it has been 10-15 years since he last used it. I reminded him the last time he made hay I was too small to stack the bales, and I am 36 now so do the math. It has been 25-30 years since it was last used. The rear section of the pto shaft is long and it looks to have a split in the round tube where one side slides into the other. I'm sure that is rusted as well. I sprayed that one with Kroil, but I can't do electrolysis on it as it is close to 10' long unless I make a custom container to soak it in. I got the short piece cooking and I ordered a manual off of ebay tonite so we will see what I find out.

Most any PTO shaft that drives anything towed or mounted to 3PT must have a slipyoke. It has to change length when you turn, go over a hill or raise and lower the implement. Otherwise it would be pulling or pusing the tractors stub shaft anytime it has to change length. Too much pushing in can really do some damage.

Chuck, I had one of those #290 mowditioners, I'm sure the short shaft moved if I remember correctly. I have a relative who's dad & grandad sold Olivers, New Holland & New Idea forever, and he still stocks all that stuff, so I know the sickle sections are available. I'm sure he he could help if needed. I really liked that machine but could not keep the gearbox together, really hated to send it for scrap, all was good except gearbox & could not locate another. Most likely The Allis' had too much power & knocked that machine fine...Harvey
