Well, this one kind of came up all of a sudden out of the blue. My
father saw it advertised in the farm paper on Friday and went and bought
it Saturday morning. It looks unbelievable in the pictures. My father
is picky about used equipment and he seemed impressed with this
combine. I guess the old E will probably be mostly retired now. For
the size of our farm an E/K/K2 would probably be the most appropriate size, but
F's seem a little more plentiful around the country. Since my father
doesn't have cows any more and thus no need to pick ear corn, he's been
hiring the corn combining for at least three years but just prefers to
not have to depend on a custom operator. (There is no corn head for the
E). I'll bet he'll plant more oats, beans and corn next year! LOL Anyone have any secret tips or advise for owning and operating an F3 when one is coming from many years of operating an E? We also never have done corn with the E.

My jaw kind of dropped when I saw the pictures. Haven't seen it in person yet. Supposedly still owned by the original owner...dealer selling it for him. |

The transition from E to F3 will be easier than you think. By the second day you'll wonder why you were worried!

Wow!Worth whatever you paid I'd say.looks like well cared for.You will find it to work just like the E only easier.Same type of settings apply.I only do corn and soys (F2) and the fan is wide open.Operators manual will tell you everything you need to know.Check fan choke adjustment to be sure it's like the book says.

I've always wondered...what is the real advantage of a hydro over the gears and variable v belt drive? It didn't bother me that it wasn't a hydro. Seems that the gears and v belt may be more reliable than a hydro in a 31 year old machine...but I know nothing of the hydro tranny. An F3 has a 5 speed gear transmission instead of a 3 doesn't it? It is a rigid head. Soybeans are a very minor crop on our farm. Some years we have none. My dad mostly wanted a corn harvester and small grain too. How do I tell if it has the header control for a flex head if we ever looked for one? Don't believe there is a chopper. |

Advantage? Easier to change directions otherwise variable will do all the speed changing you need.Been running variables for 30yrs.No prob.It just ain't as COOL!

Very nice. My F is in comparable condition. How many hours on it? I dont like my variable speed but it may just need adjusted. Its very jerky. And reverse is way too fast!

We have an F2 that we bought before harvest. We love it, but if the F3 is like the F2, you'll want to come up with some way to make it easier to enter the grain tank. That is not an easy job for me to do!
You'll love that machine though!

Grew up in the hills and always had a hydro. I remember sitting on an old hog water with mom all day long. We had a F then a F2. My question is what is a F3??????

That's what I was thinking. Why would one enter the grain tank. We've had a Gleaner E for nearly 40 years and I think I have yet to enter the grain tank! |

Only reason you wouldn't want a hydro. Is you have never had one. That's a very nice looking combine.

The header control module, if it has one, would be by the gear shift levers on your right hand side. It should have a three position switch for low, medium, and high cut. It may also have a rocker switch for automatic or manual control.

Well said a gear shift be hard to go back to. Plus with hydro you can make it a complete combine and have RWA. |

Doesn't have it. Didn't think it did. Like I said, its main purpose will be a corn machine with some small grains. Never do many beans if any so I don't think it will be a problem. Can be a reason to get out the Gleaner E with the 10 foot head to do a few beans once every few years! ![]() |

Well, you have to remember that this is a move up from a Gleaner E. My father is excited about having power steering! But seriously, I'm curious as to why exactly the hydro is so much more desirable to operate. Faster response? I'm not doubting, just curious. The only experience I have with a machine with a hydro on it is this one! LOL |

On our F2, the 433I engine has the oil filter right up front, so you have to access it through the grain tank. I don't know about an F3, but for the filter change alone, a step would be worth it to me.

I never had a problem just reaching over the engine to pull the filter.
