Saw a nail in a guys truck tire. He told me it wasn't leaking air so he leaves it alone. If I see a nail in my tire I fix/remove it. Any thoughts? Thanks

He'll learn that soon. The nail went in and it's going to come out

It may take MONTHS for it to come out depending on type of nail, size, head, temperature, air pressure, roads, etc. He's 'driving om borrowed time' ? Putting off the inevitable ??

Inevitable
Reported a nail in tire in my city vehicle. Fleet assessed it and removed the nail as it was not leaking. 2 weeks later I had to report a flat tire. |

A nail in a tire is an obvious problem. Many wheeled military tactical vehicles have a centrallized tire inflation system that will replenish losses if a tire is breached, which can be a very critical thing under combat conditions... like, when you're getting shot at and can't get out to pull out a nail... And if I'm on the road and discover a nail through a tread, I'll drive to a repair shop... and if it's not gonna make it, I'll pull the nail and stuff in a slimey plug... But dismissing a breached tire on a car is idiotic. It's GONNA fail, and it's gonna kill a perfectly good tire doing it. Dismissing it in a trailer or truck tire... anything over 40psi... is a very dangerous problem. People think that a tire that has a nail puncture will leak down and fail slowly... this is not always true... and when one tire goes, it can often take the adjacent tire WITH it.

I usually remove nail and patch with plug . Then take off when I have time and have tire place patch from inside.

If you have a problem, fix it. Otherwise you are just asking for more trouble.

I had a screw in a tire on my dump trailer for about 3 years. If the trailer set for a month, it would go flat. I would pump it up, use it and, of it sat, it would go soft or flat again. I used it that way until I had a 180-mile (one way) trip to make with it. I had a heck of a time getting the screw out.
I finally got it out and plugged it. That was a couple years ago. No problems since.

When I have such issues, I try to put it off as it is an inconvenience, but I never just live with it, he must be standing on thin ice, then when the inevitable happens he'll ask "what's the cause of this?"
