Some of you may know that I’m in the process of slowly swapping the 300-6 to a 351w in my bull nose Ford.
I bought a late model low miles 5.8 EFI motor. I stripped off all the garbage and bought a cast iron Ford 4 barrel intake. I had to switch timing covers as well to put a manual fuel pump on. I had to retrieve some salvage yard SBF engine perches. I’ve got the motor ready to go in now.
I went Saturday to a salvage yard in MO. I bought power steering pump brackets and alternator brackets and pulleys and v8 transmission cooler lines.
I have an old Ford/motor craft 4100 4barrel carb. When I set it on the intake the throttle linkage hits. If I use a 1/4” spacer it all clears.
The Ford spacer has a hollowed our area that exhaust enters from the intake manifold to the EGR valve.
I have a thicker spacer that I want to run that has a vacuum pier for the pcv.
Only problem is that it isn’t as wide as the egr spacer and I worry about an exhaust leak right under the carb.
Do you think I can use exhaust gasket material to make a base gasket ?
The thick spacer just covers that exhaust hole by a fraction.
I need the thick spacer for the vacuum port or I’d just run a thick gasket with the egr spacer.

 Hey Thad,,,I remember runnin onto something like that on a ford also,,,what I did was cut a piece of flat tin just big enough to cover the gap and put under the spacer with a gasket on either side,,,never had an issue with that trk,,,,Clap

Joe do you think the bottom gasket should be exhaust gasket material?

maybe make the gasket outta tissue paper! make sure to put a whole roll of it near it in case you need more paper!

 Yea,,is what I would do,Thad . Cut the tin plate a little bigger than the manifold and use a gasket, plate, gasket then your spacer, with yet aiother gasket between the spacer and carb. Should be good to go.
  I did remember that I did the same thing on a 351M and a motorcraft 4 barrel and never had an issue after that fix.

They used to make asbestos type gasket in a small sheet and cut to fit.
Don't know if they still do.

That’s what I had in mind. I’ve used it to make exhaust manifold gaskets before.

Mr. Gasket makes a heat dissipator plate that will cover that hole. I came across that on a 460 BBF. Installed the heat dissapator plate down first with a little high heat RTV, next a gasket and a small 1/2" hiker Bakeolite spacer I had. Another gasket and then the Carb. Worked great. You shouldn't have to worry bout hood clearance..

The Alternator spacer was a big heavy ugly piece of cast with a saddle for a smog pump. T cut an aluminum tube off the old smog pump. I cleaned it up and turned it down on the lathe and made a nice simple spacer.
All the brackets are painted and ready to go.
