Awakened at 3:15, helo really close to house, close enough to have the belly white flashing light lighting up bedroom window curtains while noisy enough to awaken my deaf ears, hauling mail south. We are not on a routine flight path especially that early of a morning.

I use Flightradar24 to watch the planes, real scary how many are in the air, worldwide. Lots of 'orange' choppers here ( air ambulances). Also see the huge Russian plane we put a 'lien' on, sitting at Pearson airport ( toronto).

Very likely Life Flight just leaving a pick up LZ and enroute to a medical facility. All aircraft are restricted to a minimum altitude except for take off/landing and special circumstances.
The white flashing light is usually a civilian bird. Probably the most dangerous job in civilian aviation is medevac due to some of the areas in which they have to land.

A couple of years ago, my daughter heard a chopper that was really loud (she's used to them from military and that Ft. Rucker flies near her all the time, so she went out to look as it was landing in her back yard. It was a medical copter, there had been an accident nearby and her place was the only nearby location with a large enough clear area for them to land.

Then, when you have money to burn…..
The neighbor across the main road from the farm is my good friend and veterinarian clinic. Day after day I kept hearing a low very close copter, didn’t know what the heck was going on. Spotted it really low, over the fence line and into the woods. Thought either drug hunting or fugitive escaped. Then finally saw it landing right behind the vet clinic! What the heck. Turns out the owners of the helicopter had a horse that needed treatment several days in a row. To save doc a couple hours driving they picked him up by helicopter! |

When I was a Sophomore in high school, an Army helicopter landed on the playground of our school. They were dropping off recruiting materials. As part of it, were were allowed to go out and see the chopper, and the crew had it all opened up. Here's the cool part, it had a 300Hp Allis Chalmers gas turbine in it. I made sure to point that out to all the green/red guys.

Local Hellicopter med service here offers a "pre payment " for services if needed. Around 1500 . Not full payment but major reduction of charges. There is a provision that if unused in a certain amount of time, they give you a free ride while they train. I do plumbing work at their facility and have tried to trade for a ride. No luck yet.

Wow, that must have been quite a startling experience! I can imagine how jarring it would be to have a helicopter so close to your house in the early hours, especially with its bright lights and noise. It's funny how moments like these can completely disrupt your sleep. In the meantime, if you're ever planning a trip and looking to fly comfortably, I recently stumbled upon https://travelbusinessclass.com/turkish-business-class . They offer some great deals on business class flights, including options with Turkish Airlines, which could be a nice upgrade for your next journey.

The hospital chopper ( they have their own) here flies over our house all the time on its way between Champaign and Bloomington. Sometimes 3 or 4 times a day.
