Dad acquired a Mtd blower at an estate sale last summer. He replaced/rebuilt some wear parts up front and tuned the engine up during the fall thinking he would be set for whatever snow amount came down. I stopped in to the farm yesterday for the first time after a somewhat heavy snow "here" last week and asked how the blower worked. He was disappointed in how uneven the machine cut(26" I think). I grabbed the handle bars to move it away from the wall and "think" I might have an idea what's wrong- when the right handle is pushed down, the front left corner comes up 3" and the other way around pushing the left handle down. Seems like excessive play/slop in the axle area?? Maybe they are designed like this though? I ran a Troy-Bilt for an elderly neighbor 10 years ago but don't recall a "floating axle" on it. Thanks

Sounds like bearing is loose on axle. Could be as simple as bolts came loose in flange. Most of them just have a 3 bolt flange that hold the axle bearings on each side.

you have to look into and find that slop in the framework. I have never seen one like that.

It sounds like the bronze bushings are kaput. It fits into a hexagonal hole, kinda obvious. Also you need the correct spacers to keep the axle from moving lefty-righty more than 1/8 inch.

I have a MTD 28" ---10 hp. 2-stage unit and when you push down on either handle, both sides come up even. Yours must have something broke or worn. They should be solid. thanks; ac fleet

Trust me, I have a feeling there was a GOOD reason why the trustee of the estate let it go for the $$ dad got it for. In hind site, it's probably $250 up in smoke

I forgot to add... IF you don't have a full tank of gas, you can rotate it forward onto the blower housing.Remove the pins holding the wheels on, slide off the spacers, remove what's left of the bushings. Bushings are $6 ? each. Buy 2,replace both. Usually right one wears out first. Also great time to remove lower case and LIGHTLY lube up the speed shifting stuff as well as the chain and sprockets. If gas tank is empty roll it up on the front blower opening take the screws that hold the pate on the back and bottom off and you can see what is wrong, maybe something just slid out of place. I have a 30" that works great. I am not so sure but you might be able to go to there web site and download a manual.

yes, you can get almost any MTD manual, even for 40 year old rototillers ! Most MTD snowblowers 'share' a LOT of common parts. You can also use 'partstree.com' to get diagrms and part numbers.

Hud, there is NO amount of tire pressure difference to make the axle wobble go away LOL!! The issue is strictly in the final drive/tranny area. There is literally 1 1/2" of slop in the axle area coming out of the housing. I hope to get back out to the farm this weekend to get the machine up on a table and dive into it. Again, thanks to all.
