My mower deck is in good shape but is missing the metal for around the blades on the deck is that a must have are is it ok to use with out it and if it is needed where can I find it at

I call them 'skirts'. Most(all) cheap,err.. 'economy' decks don't have them..so you can run without. They may be there to protect the spindles from flying rocks ? or keep the spindles clean(ish) to help cool them. It would be nice to know what they're real purpose is, though.
I made one from some thick 2 1/2" steel strapping to make the 'ring' or 'skirt', then welding washers on for 'mounting tabs'.I remember it tok me longer to find 'something' big and round to bend the strap around than it did to weld it up and the 3 or 4 washers !

On the simplicity decks they arr part of the mulch and vac kit. They didnt come with the basic mower deck
