Mouse in side the clutch Really Help

   Has anyone else had a mouse /rat  critter   go into the timing hole  and build a nest.  by the  fly wheel and build a nest inside the clutch housing on a D-15.  I pulled the  throwout bearing  round  inspecton plate  and pulled  out a lot of nest material from a rat or mouse or something.   What can I do  to prevent this and  will it cause any damage   in there.

	I don't think it would hurt anything. You could cut a small piece of orange duct tape and put it over the timing hole.

	B's and C's were always having that problem with mice making nests in the tool boxes.

	When I split my D-14 apart after a 35 year 'nap', there was an entire CITY ofmouse house in there, including the starter guts. Wondered why the old starter was slow and smoking! You can by snap in screens for electronic enclosures that should fit at a good electrical supply house. Jay

	I'd split the tractor to make sure their pee didn't wreck something. You don't want that clutch coming loose at an inopportune time, due to a severely corroded part giving way under pressure. I don't know what they drink, but boy when they pee, it will eat about anything.

	I recently had this happen on an F20 IH. It had been sitting in a shed for 35 yrs. They ruined the clutch assy. to the point it wasn't even rebuildable. The springs were even eaten up by mouse pee. I'm with Glenn on this one. John

	Ya, them dumb mice are always in my Dads 15 as well. Same thing, always in the clutch area. We just leave the cover off the bottom and quit trying to plug it up, they always seem to find a way in anyways. For some reason they like it in there. Keep a fire extingusher hand too, just in case, we do. As for the spliting the tractor to check things out, it isint a bad idea, but with all due respect, if we split the tractor evey time there was a mouse in there, the tractor would never be put back together! LOL! We just fish out what mouse nest we can with screwdriver (with tractor off!) and vacuum, etc.. and away we go. The rest eventually finds its way out. And yes, it ususally stinks. The best thing to do is use the tractor as often as you can, it seems to deter them from going in there some. When it sits, they seem to make home. And for whatever reason, my C sits next to the D15 in the barn, and the mice NEVER bother it (knock on wood). Can't figgure out why. And the C sits most of the year, while the D15 gets used on a semi regular basis. They just must like the D15's better, LOL! Good luck!

	I found evidence on my B that a mouse had loosened the set screw on the brake drum and pushed it aside to get more room for a fine nest. I guess them Kentucky mice have learned to make and use tools.

	After every winter, my D14 torque tube is filled with insulation and stuff! As if that wasn't enough, the other 14 and Series 4 I pulled out of a barnyard seem to have mouse nests everywhere. The left brake on the 17 is seized tight. Last weekend I took the cover plate off and found the brake housing filled with garbage and brake is rusted solid! I've got my work cut out for me!

	I wonder why the mice seem to prefer orange tractors?? I have other makes that don't get used much and they never seem to bother with them. Guess they like the best!LOL

	Speaking of mouse nests, a couple of years ago I was doing some mowing on a very steep hillside with my WD-45 where I had to use the brakes a lot and soon there was smoke coming out of the spring hole on the RH brake housing. There was actually a fire in there. Dumped some water in there to extinguish it and "bang" the brake drum cracked! Dumb!!! Another time (same tractor) when I started her up for the mowing season, I could not steer it. The prior owner had removed the "cranking" shaft from the front bolster and the mice had filled the cavity right full of hay, thread and all kinds of stuff. Couldn't get much of it out thru the inspection cover so I spent a lot of time with a hooked piece of wire retrieving all that stuff thru the crank holes. Needless to say, I have those holes "corked" up now. LOL

	I had a mouse or squirrel that must have been living in a B I am working on. The tool box was a foot deep in walnuts, and evrywhere a walnut would fit they were stuffed in. Up around the radiator it was full of nuts. The mouse or squirrel must have been upset to come home, and find all his hard work missing.
