I am trying to finish my 49' C restoration, and the last thing is the hydraulics. All I have is a cylinder and handle that attaches to the pump. Do I need a valve of some sort ? What does the line hookup to? I just cant figure out what lets off the pressure if the line is hooked up directly to the pump?

When you move handle atachefd to pump it will give you three positions , lift -hold - lower  .When in lower position weight of implement pushes oil back through  pump to resovior. before taking pump apart  flush with a solvent  and reprime with oil . It may save you a disamble.

The valve is built into the pump and the handle attaches to the valve.
