I've read several posts about the spindles on the model B here, and have realized that the spindles bushings on my B are getting a little tired. So I decided to get me a replacement kit. It is one of the replacement kits for a Ford 8n/9n/2n.

I can't find anything about this procedure in any of my model B manual or books for the procedure to replace the spindles bushings.

Is there anything special I should need to know about this procedure???

In my kit it has a thrush bearing. Is this something that I will use to rebuild my spindles for the B, or is it just for the ford????

There was no thrust bearing in my '49. A coping chisel may be needed to take the old bushings out. Pushing the new ones in usually shrinks them so you may need to hone them back out to size if the spindles won't slide in. I used a piece of pipe with a slit cut in the end to put the end of a piece of emery cloth into then wrap the emery around the pipe and work it back and forth inside the new bushings until you get a fit with the spindles. If you spindles are worn you'll have to take them to a machinust as new ones aren't available to my knowledge.

Bushings are split. Ken's advice is right on. If you don't haave a coping chisel, you can use the point on a small wood spade bit to seperate the old bushing (locate the split in the bushind and tap the point in next to the split. Once the split is opened, switch to a small round nose punch to work it loose. Once free, remove with a good vise grip/channel lock pliers. I clean and hone the spindle bore (to remove any burrs from the punches and clean up the corrosion crud) before installing the new bushing. Ken's advice about honing out the bushing once installed is also very good.
Have seen thrust washers on some and none on some. Check the up and down play to determine if they are needed. Tighten the steering arm and if you can lift the spindle, place a thrust washer (or a machine washer) on the spindle (I prefer to place the shim under the steering arm) to remove the slack.
What this country needs is more unemployed politicians-and lawyers.

I just put a set of ford bushing in my wide front C. They will work but the ford bushing is the right diameter but they are longer. I did not notice this until I had driven the first one in to far and onto the shoulder causing the bushing to crush. After I learned the hard way I drove the others in to the shoulder and then ground them off.
