I can't believe you do not get them.  We get them here in
East Central Ks.   They look like and over grown mosquito.  That is the best way I know how to describe them.

Years ago,,when I used to fish for trout up in northern NM,,we used to look for the Mayfly hatches as that would make them trouts go crazy and start feeding,,but don't ever remember any bein more than 1/2" long and them trouts loved em,,,,Clap
The hatches never lasted more than 30-45 minutes at a time and would stop as quick as they had started,,,,

I loved fishing for trout in northern New Mexico. Once after catching a few on red wigglers and cleaning them I found their bellies full of Blue Damselflies.  Caught several more with carefully hooking a live Blue Damselfly on a tiny hook.  Trick to getting them to bite was to float the bait.  If it sunk they would not bite it.

Shameless, we have Mosquito Hawks up here so you probly have em to.

I've seen a Tarantula Hawk in Arizona once before to, there a little different than the Skeeter Hawk.
Reason our Skeeter Hawks are so big is that our Skeeters have Woodticks on em. Wink

We call them fish flies.  The NWS Doppler radar can pick up hatches as when they hatch they fly towards the light which historically is the moon.  I lived in a little town in MI on the shore of a large lake.  During fish fly season, every morning the fire dept. would hose them off of all of the downtown buildings and streets.  When you drive on them slow you can hear them crackling under the tires.  I am happy to no longer live in a fish fly area!

They really don't eat mosquito's, but dragonflies do, and they just spit out the ticks. Wink

May Flies may be a nuisance, but they don't bite like mosquitos. They no longer feed when they reach adulthood. The sole purpose is to mate and then die.
