Friends:

I’m in the process of restoring a 1940 B. It has a good, functioning magneto. However, the aluminum is a bit dull and the black cap has turn almost grey. I’m thinking of buying some auto aluminum cleaner for the aluminum. My question is what about black plastic cap. Good new ones are quite pricey. I’m thinking of properly taping off all holes and painting it black.

Does anybody have any other tricks to help the appearance of magnetos? Thanks.

When I restore our customer's Mags, if the lower cover and upper end cap are in good shape, I usually glass bead the parts, then I use vacuum cap plugs and stick them in the high tension towers so the paint doesn't go in the towers. I use Rustoleums Black Trim & Bumper paint P/N 251574 Matte Black. Gives the cap a semi gloss look without looking to glossy and fake lookin'. I'll put the end cap in the lower cover and spray the two together so the paint is uniform and the contacts of the towers don't get any paint on them either.  For the aluminum body, after glass beading the unit, I spray Rustoleums textured silver paint P/N 251053 Silver over the old aluminum. Gives the body a nice new look. Once the unit is back together, it looks like a brand new unit. HTH.
