magneto kill tab

My B has a tab on the side of the magneto with a post to connect a wire. If I pushh that tab against the body of the magneto, shouldn't that kill the engine, or do I need to run a wire to a kill button?

Either way will work. The wire of course needs to run to ground.  I got tired of having to get off my 49 WD to push the tab and I got really fancy and ran a wire to an intermittent switch on the dash panel. Only took 25-30 years to figure out that I should rehook the wire and be able to kill the motor from the seat. I can be educated, but, it takes a LOT of repititions

For convenience and saftey I would run a wire to the switch. You can get a magneto switch. In position--stop-- the switch is closed. Out position--run-- the switch is open. 
Just hook a wire to ground and to the switch and from the other side of the switch to the magneto. I know all of this because my boyfriend and I just did my B.
Not bad for a girl.

You can do both, but the ground INSIDE your magneto also needs to be hooked up. They are almost always hooked up anyway, and the only reason they wouldn't be is if someone was fiddling with them. If neither works, check that.

In most cases, the Fairbanks "J" series Mag came on the B Model. Not sure which and what one you have. Assuming its a FMJ4B3, internally, there is an insulated wire running from the grounding tab to the points. Make sure that insulated wire is there or not severed from vibration or as Morton mentioned, someone may have been in there prior to you. The safe way is installing a switch in the Ammeter panel with a circuit running to the grounding post/tab of the Mag. This allows you to shut down the engine without getting off the machine. We offer a Remote Mag Kill Switch kit which gives you a nice push/pull switch and wiring to do the job if interested. Also, make sure there isn't a lot of paint under the grounding tab. This may be why it isn't shutting off either. Paint is a great insulator.....

Run you a jumper wire from that terminal and ground it out and see if it kills the engine... then you'll know. If that works, then I'd definately run a kill switch of some sorts. Either a toggle, push/pull, a push button, or my favorite... a key switch for security.

Problem solved. When the magneto was rebuilt it was beadblasted and sprayed with clear. The tab wasn't getting a ground through the clear coat. Thanks, Steve.

Ok. I would like to hook up a kill switch on my WC. How do I go about doing that. I know you can attach the wire to the tab on the magneto and just touch the other end on the steering shaft and kill it but how do you hook up a switch.

On my WD I used the dash panel and the factory hole. If your WC is Styled, maybe you have a dash panel/switch box. If unstyled may not have one. Which ever, the process is simple. All you need is a switch, and either a hole or a bracket mounted  wherever it would be handy. Run an insulated wire to one terminal of the switch from the nut holding the kill tab on the mag, another wire to a chassis ground and whenever contact is made through the switch your mag is shorted out and the motor will die.
You don't really have to be smart if you know who is!

any toggle switch will work. connect your wire to one terminal, and connect the other switch terminal to a bolt on the frame (ground). when you turn the swith "on" it grounds out the mag and motor stops. ..... another note, if you use a double polel double throw toggle, you can turn your alternator on (excitation) and mag off, with the same switch.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I have a styled and an unstyled one. The styled one don't run but it has the hole in the panel with the ampers gauge. The unstyled one is the one I want to do it to, it sounds simple enough. I hate having to put it in neutral and get off and walk around it to shut it off. Too scary for my liking.

In past years many guys would drill a hole in the steering wheel post, mount a bracket and switch and run one wire to the ground and the other insulated wire to the kill tab. Very simple and very effective! Might want to use a push button switch like a horn or starter button, that way you don't have to remember whether up or down, in or out is on or off!

You have to be careful with those magneto grounding wires.  Don't count on the switch being in the off position actually keeping the engine from starting.  Any break in the wire or disconnect in the switch will leave the magneto hot.  In other words, it really doesn't "turn the engine off."  It only tries to, if everything works right.  It does not "fail safe."

 I tied string to the tab and throttle quadrant, gently pull the string when I want to kill the engine.
