    Posted: 07 Nov 2010 at 9:09am

My1952 B has a WICO Magneto and it was on there when I bought it.  It was hooked up to a key switch which the key was rusted in the switch, wiring was a God awful mess.  More tape and wire nuts that the average electrician carrys in his truck.

I bought a new on-off key switch such as found on pg. 29 of the Steiner's catalog p/n ABC065.  My question is does this have to be wired so you ground the magneto to turn it on?
Since I am not doing any other wiring, no lights, no charging system, just the starter, positive ground.

Did I mention that I didn't try to start it since I put the magneto back on, hope I did it right, after painting the tractor since it's still sitting on jack stands.  I haven't put water in the new radiator to test for leaks yet either.

Thanks for any comments.

You ground the magneto to KILL the ignition.  Run is open circuit... and the wisest thing to do, in the case of the mess... is to pull a new wire from the mag to the keyswitch, and also a good ground wire from the block to the keyswitch.  Failure to do so will likely grant you a failure to start, or an intermittant run problem, or missing... or best yet, a nasty shock when you reach for the switch.
