i bought another m2 with the header height switch on the top w the other buttons but not the 3 position knob by the shifter. the one in the other machine is junk
do i need it? will it worl without this? should i add it? how do i wire for a series 3 head?

You will only need the 3 position switch to run a floating header with the robot, you can run any other header (or even a floater if you dont want the robot) without one. We have an L2 that was adapted to run a series 3 header that has extra wires connected to the reel speed button with a separate add-on connector to connect it to the solenoid on the hydraulic reel speed on the header.
