    Posted: 04 Apr 2025 at 7:01am
Good day, I have a M crawler that runs great, someone put in a 12V battery but despite it having the provisions for a generator, there isnt one on the tractor so I have to jump start it sometimes.  Anyone have photos of a M crawler, or a U tractor as I think they share the same engine, that could send some photos of the charging system on the engine?

I got the crawler from MN from a Allis guy, thing is a beast so wanting to add a charging system and re-patch the block, seems like block cracking was common on these as both of my M's have cracked blocks.

Thanks!  I may try to make a strap to go over the mount, what I wonder, as I havent removed it, is how do you replace the belt and tension it?  Im lucky to have a 12V generator from a WD or WD45 with a external regulator that I could likely use, just need to think about the belt tensioning.  Alternatively I could use a 12V internally regulated alternator, just have to make sure the speeds are high enough to charge appropriately.

Probably have to take the mag off.  That shaft probably only turns 650 rpm high idle.  The bracket that the generator is strapped to is slotted for adjustment.

If your generator is in serviceable condition I would certainly use it rather than spend money on an alternator. A voltmeter, rather than the original ammeter, is recommended.

Does your generator have an actual regulator or is it just a cutout relay? It makes a difference as to the actual wiring needed.
