7 Marines and a Navy Sailor died in a training accident off the Coast of San Diego on July 30. Amphibious Track sunk and took them down. CNN reporting that 5 other Marines survived and we're picked up by the ship that they were attempting to return to. Apparently they were 70 miles offshore and near San Clemente island.
Turns out the son of my wifes cousin was one of the survivors. Hearing from his parents, and Facebook posts of other survivors, that he fought like hell as it was going down and was able to pull 2 of the other survivors out. Pretty courageous for a 20 year old! Just saw him at a XMAS and he was "all Marine" sitting out chatting with his cousins! |

One of the guys I was in service with was trained as an amphibious operator. We were sitting there drinking a good German beer talking about our military experiences. He said "when those darn waves started coming over the side of that darn tractor, I ask myself WHAT in hell am I doing in this dam thing"? Dang induction Sargent talked him into requesting that MOS. We will be praying for these Marines families and the guys who survived. They may well be impacted by this for the rest of their lives.
