Looked at two today one p/s and one p/d trams. Both have cosmetic issues. Which transmission would be best for light field work.

power shift is better for all field work. Put your finger in the blow by tube and taste/smell for antifreeze is the first thing I would do...

X2

And take some test strips for checking the coolant pH to see if the filter has been changed when it should.

I bought a 7020 power direct last summer, used it to chop 350 acres of stalks last fall. I like the tractor. We have 2 8050 ps, so I didn't know if I would like the pd or not. The advantage of the pd is the selection of gears. In the working speeds, the 7020 has 6 or 7 gears in the 4 to 7 mph range. The power shift is much more limited. But if you are constantly changing speeds (baling, raking, hauling manure, fertilizer grinding feed or such), the ps is the better tranny. Tractorhouse websit has the charts for the ps and pd trans for the 7020 to compare.

I've only seen 1 but they made a 16speed PD; I'd proly not give that tranny as high of marks.   It just had 4 forward gears instead of 5. I love my PD for field work and love my PS for loader work.   now when I find one with FWA; i'll be in heaven!

We have a 7020 Allis Chalmers.  One way to check the head gasket is to start the tractor and run for about 2-3 minutes, shut it off and remove the radiator cap.  If there is compression leaking into the cooling system, you will hear a "puff".  It's kind of a tricky test to do, because it does not take long for the cooling system to pressurize from normal warming of the engine.
