In Coleman Tx. Stopped in today to get a couple items, noticed the 1/2 empty shelves, and a couple carts in an aisle staked full, I asked the clerk ‘are you moving’? He responded ‘nope we’re closing down’. I said ‘o crap’. He said the owner notified a couple weeks ago. He said business was steady at this location, and the other location about 50 minutes or so away, but the owner ‘decided to get out’. Now this little town will be dependent on O’Reilly’s only. Next closest town with a parts store is 35 miles.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

OReilly's and CARQUEST is kicking NAPA in the rear. These two are feeding parts at far less pricing where NAPA used to be the leader then the Bargain caves stepped up the game as Auto Zone that hurt the retailer. Then demand for parts Quicker and more Volume sales brought OReily's and Carquest faster up front. Can have NO EXTRA Shi[pping costs parts in a day or two through Carquest so long as in Indiana Warehousing or in Supplier stocks. NAPA Here closed several years ago as was charging freight on nearly everything to compensate expenses.

The 3 locals NAPAs have FAR different prices for same item ,depending if you are walkin or have an account. AND price changes when you lookup onliine as well !!I don't understand why that is, you'ld think a chain store/franchise would have same price - all stores ( except Hawaii and Alaska of course.... ) |

Our little town still has Oreilly’s and Napa.
I get a decent discount at Napa but that seems to be slipping away. They have one really good parts man and one half decent parts man. I have to bite my tongue every time I go in our Oreilly |

Locally, NAPA is pricing themselves out of business. A couple years ago, I stopped at our local NAPA to pick up an oil filter for my diesel Ford pickup. I was quoted over $40 more for the oil filter than I could buy a Motorcraft filter from the dealer. I said no thanks and stopped at the Ford dealer and got one.
I haven't been back since.

Yeah, Napa ain't what it used to be. Then what is? In general I see very few customers at the various parts stores around here anymore. Guess nobody does their own maintenance anymore? I seem to be headed in that direction myself.

As much as I wish I could support any local business with my patronage, of the 5 NAPA stores in less than a 30 minute drive from me, it's always a waste of my time. Often I will call first to check on availability first to save me the trouble. The biggest problem is the counter help doesn't know anything and I can search on the internet for any given item faster that I can get any one of them to even grasp what I'm needing. Then only to find that they don't stock any parts for anything not made in this century. Then as mentioned before any generic item is at a premium price compared to any of the other auto parts stores around. About the same for the TSC stores near me, they should close.

Seems many now use ONLINE services and wait the days or so over spending a hour trying to explain what part you need to a clerk who has no idea of parts but has to look it up himself to say they don't have it .
Then I looked up a part online and came up to $16 in MPLS , and called same name store a mile away - their price was $25 would not honor price - printed add and went across the border to WI - they honored the $16 price + gave military discount for serving . |

My one and only visit to a NAPA was to have an alternator out of a Gehl skidloader tested. He said he couldn't do it cuz he had no specs to load in to the tester. So, essentially the same result as any other parts store. If they closed, I would not miss them

I agree about prices, my local NAPA prices are high compared to other parts stores. They do however, have parts for my older (1980s and earlier) cars that are not available from other stores. As with the other stores it is hit or miss with the counter person and their ability to help.
During Covid I received some good specials from them, like spend $25.00 get 25% off. Those days seem to be gone, my latest email was spend $125.00 to get any sort of discount.

The NAPA in Winfield, Ks. is a very good source for parts. Quality of parts is as good or better than O'Reilly or Auto Zone.
Counter people know their stuff. Wish the other parts stores were as useful.

My hometown's had a NAPA over 50 years, so have the other county seat town's N, E and S. But here in Sioux City they keep having 1 open and in about 2-3 years it closes and then another opens in about 6 months. Rinse and repeat, several times in the 20+ years I've been here.
