Wifey, made spaghetti stroganoff day before yesterday, put aluminum foil over leftovers pan, came in this noon for lunch, open refrigerator and noticed where aluminum foil sagging on the casserole in couple spots, and foil had dissolved where touching the food. What the heck is in Lipton Onion Soup mix, that would dissolve aluminum foil?

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Reynold's says a reaction happens when aluminum foil comes in contact with salt, vinegar, highly acidic foods -- such as tomatoes -- or highly spiced foods. The foil seems to dissolve or get eaten away, but what happens is it turns into an aluminum salt. Aluminum salts, like sodium aluminum phosphate, are found in many processed foods. Most scientists do not consider aluminum toxic. The Reynold's website says: "The food can be safely eaten; however, the aluminum salt particles can be removed from the food to improve the appearance of the food."
If the aluminum reaction bothers you, in many situations you can put parchment paper between the food and the foil. The company says this can also happen whe |

Aluminum and tomato dishes be it foil or even the pot it's cooked in can have a reaction.
Best to find a different covering or pot to cook in - Pyrex , stainless steel or coated ceramic pots - Just like tomato products seems to stain many plastic containers if content is reheated in them . Something i learned over the years ruining wife's Tupperware when I took spaghettis , chilies , stuffed peppers or other dishes made with tomato sauce of any type and microwaved them to reheat .

Yep, salt... aluminum is dissolved particularly rapidly by salt and ammonia... Fortunately, Aluminum doesn't rust at all... that's why Audi and Ford have gone to aluminum bodies... ![]() |

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.
