during this last stay at the hospital, when the nurses or techs came in every few hours to do an assessment (vitals) the BP cuff would blow up and off my arms, they would go get another cuff and usually by the 3rd one, they could get a reading! now....every time just before the cuff blew, my arm was compressed so bad that my hand would turn purple. and hurt? whew! I kept telling them to go get a different machine. they kept telling me I had high blood pressure and the machine was doing it's job correctly! BS! if it was doing it's job right, why is it blowing up the cuffs? no answer on that! plus I've never had high blood pressure in my life, it's always been a bit below normal. they kept telling me I had high BP and would medicate me for it! now...they went thru ALOT of cuffs during my stay. and when the one day nurse blew another one, she went and got one of the old fashioned cuffs (manuel type) and used it, and it showed my normal BP...just a little lower than a normal BP. well...that got her to thinking, so she tried to re-program the auto BP machine, and couldn't. I told her that I would not allow that nachine to be used on me again. the next time for a vitals check a few hours later came from a tech, and I told her that the machine is not working properly and not to use it, she didn't bat an eye, nor pay any attention to me and strapped that cuff on me and hit the button....I screamed at her to take that cuff off me NOW! and she did, then asked what my problem was? I told her it's not working properly and all the BP records they have been putting in the puter were wrong! she said to the tune that they don't make mistakes like that. I told her to put that cuff on her own arm and see for herself! so after a roll of her eyes and a whisper of something she put it on her own arm and hit the button....then all I start hearing is ow,ow,ow,OW,OW,OW! she rips that cuff off and quickly out the door she goes shaking her arm and hand. I yelled at her and said "I TOLD YOU SO"! then my nurse came back in...went thru that past experience with her...and she said if she would put it on her arm and test herself would I let them re-test with the same machine? I told her yes. she punched a lot of buttons, put the cuff on herself, unplugged the machine and then re-connected the power, punch more buttons then turned it on. she got a reading that was normal to her, then it was my turn, and the machine ran normal, and the reading was what I normally show which was ALOT different than what was showing when they used it all week! she cut my high blood pressure meds after explaining to the doc what had taken place! didn't take long to feel a lot better after they cut out those meds! then the nurse explained to me that the auto machines have 2 settings...high/low. she says that if they test someone that does have high blood pressure, the machine keeps that into memory and then will put out higher readings to everyone else that uses it! it's supposed to be reset between patients! can't help think that that was probably a selling point to the hospital from the manufacturer so the hospital could sell more drugs? so I was given drugs for high BP when it wasn't needed, because someone didn't reset the machine when the room changed patients! I wish I would have written down the name of the manufacturer so I could get this info out! this is just info that maybe will help ya'll down the road if something like this happens to you..

'"It's supposed to be reset between patients"
Two places where everyone needs to do their jobs: hospitals and airplane hangers
You did the right thing making them check it out but next time make them verify with the cuff before you take meds you know you don't need. I had them try that on me during a physical. Checked bp said it was high and I needed bp meds I said no way. Sit there for another ten minutes and tried it again and it was perfect as it always is. The medical profession is a little to quick to prescribe some kind of pill. They tried to get me on chlorestoral medicine, I lied to them and told them I was taking it, started watching what I ate and the numbers started coming down. The PA was so proud of the meds for working . My wife is a nurse so I hear some bad stories sometimes and I question everything they want to do to me. Drives her crazy

I agree Shameless...many of those auto blood pressure machines are junk. I had them when I was in the hospital in 2016. They hurt my arm. They told me the same thing, your blood pressure is high. Well when ever someone would take it with a manual BP cuff where they hold the stethescope on your arm and look at the mercury go up or down on the wall my blood pressure is not high and it does not hurt!

I had a similar deal in the ER back in 08. I told the nurse there was something wrong with that machine. She said maybe they should get it checked out, because I was the 3rd or 4th person to complain about it trying to cut my arm off. Like a fellow said, Pffffft.
Glad yer home and hope they can sort things out to fix whatever is causing the problem. Too many times it seems, they want to treat the symptoms, and the treatment does nothing to fix the cause, and can often lead to other problems.
