I’m getting ready to do some work on my ole work truck.
Thinking of changing cabs. I’ve found a very solid nice cab with no title. Should I pass on this? |

we did that one time at work with a wrecked truck, best that I remember it took a bit of tag and title work at the county level, and I believe we had to bring it back to them to view when done. A quick call to your tag office Tuesday would let you know if it’s gonna be a pain. Don’t forget that you’ll have to advise your insurance company as the VIN will change.

NO ! Take VIN tag off old cab (drvrs side dash at window ) and tape on top of new one. Also DOOR info has VIN, need to remove that one so it can't be scanned !!!!!!! Take pictures of what you do, print a copy , store in glovebox Actually should cover up the dash one. Thieves scan and get keys ,or ownerships using it. SOBs....

I plan to use my doors and vin if possible. I’ll call the tag office Tuesday like Joe says. I’ve done this a couple times when I was younger but made no effort to do the paper work. I don’t want to do it wrong this time. |

Is a VIN Riveted on the Firewall below the WS on dash, If Remove those rivets and just use standard Pop Rivets will get that truck Confiscated. Will need BOTH the one off the Old truck cab and the New one in MO and they reissue the Original SN to a Dept of Revenue Tag the MoDOT has to install.

Neighbors in Wisconsin did a cab swap on a class 8 truck decades ago. Got corrected title, tags, insurance, the whole 9 yards. Lo and behold the Wisconsin State Patrol officer that lived in the area, pulls the truck over for a ‘random inspection’ and he about has a stroke with all the paperwork, found two different VIN numbers, inspected that truck from top to bottom, front to back, inside and out, had them on the side of the road for 3 hours, phone calls to the truck insurance company, phone calls to WI DMV, the officer was accusing the owners of theft, although he had seen that truck on the roads for over a year. Finally a Sheriff’s Deputy shows up, and State Patrol officer and Deputy have a 30 minute conversation, after all that the truck owners got a citation for one brake chamber out of adjustment, and ‘loose articles in driver’s compartment’.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

I realize I live in The Land of Fruits and Nuts. Twenty years ago I traded junk hay for junk 2 ton truck. I was hoping the old 4 speed was better than what I had in another old truck. The junker started with out much time, had some brake. Go to DMV to get a on way moving permit. It had fees against it for years of non registration, without putting a non op on it. So Ok, we will haul it home for parts. The DMV person comes unglued DO YOU HAVE A DISMANTLERS LICENCE? No, so I guess I leave it be.
Well you know the rest, hauled it home put the untested trans anyway. Yes it was better. They don't want it cheap or easy for us poor redneck flocks. I say ask questions, but fraise it as if your only looking at it, think of trying to buy to fix yours.

My nephews changed just about everything but the VIN number on the old square body Chevy I gave him. He uses it for street "stock" truck pulling. Still has to have a vin and he put a collector plate on it. I had an old cabover that the previous owner did a cab-frame swap. I got stopped for speeding with it. When the officer went to check the VIN with the registration they didn't match because we couldn't find were the tag was on the cab. Found out it was inside the side compartment door. Anyway told him I got the truck from a local guy that had multiple trucks and he maybe gave me the wrong title and nobody checked it. After some phone calls the VIN was the right number for the cab. Officer had me get a new vin tag issued from the state. Had to rivet it on and have it verified by an officer.

Went and looked at the parts truck. It was worse than my cab. I’m safe for now.
May just buy a better work truck and scrap this one. |

When I was working to apply for a "lost Title" on a 1988 GMC I was restoring a couple of years ago,.,.I found out there IS the VIN number stamped in a certain spot on the "FRAME",. When we got to the part where a Sherrif's Deputy had to come out to the house to verify THREE,. yes,. 3 places to verify the VIN,.,.!! 1 is on dash at drivers area,."2" is on Driver's door jamb and "3" on the top of frame,. under driver side door,. Chit,,.,.!!That number was very difficult to find and the Deputy made ME crawl under the trk and find it before he got under trk! It took me bout 30 minutes of scraping and cleaning the frame with steel wool and and THEN,.,.it took a Big mirror to get a look and even then,.,.there was a "discreption on one dang number whether it was a 6 or a 3 or a 8 or a 9!! The Deputy tried his best but was never satisfied bout that number but was very understanding and after 1 hour,.,.he agreed the truck VIN was legit and NOT STOLEN,.,.,.! Then,. on a whim,. I had a spare 1955 frame down in the lower 40 so I went out there and did finally find that number bout where the driver door would of been,.,.,.,.!!

Especially when you rip the tag off the mattress, the ‘man’ will be at your front door, post haste. |

Had a 1969 Dodge W300. Had the cab off the frame to repair, lengthen and paint that frame, found one spot had a number or two but not ever found a serial number. Took that to Troop C in St Louis and they agreed there was NO s/n on it and also agreed to accept the title I was issued on the old cab that came off as well issued a VIN Change number for the 1973 cab that went on it.
