Well, I've been going thru my D-17 and catching up on all the maintenance that had been overlooked for a long time by the prev. owner.
Some glaring examples:
#1. No element (copper wool) inside the breather on the valve cover.
No telling how much dust has been sucked into the engine because of this! many
people never touch these breathers altho they are supposed to be cleaned every
8-10 hours. What happened to the innards, I haven't a clue. There wasn't even a
trace there.
#2. I took about a cup of fine Schoharie valley silt out of the bottom of the cup
on the air cleaner. The good news, the oil was up to the full mark and the screen
was "clean as a whistle".
#3 The hydraulic oil was very "milky"; a sign of some serious water contamination.
It would seem to me that the breather for the hydraulics could be the culprit here
as the screened opening points up inviting the rain to enter easily.
Any of you guys with D-17s find that breather to be a problem?
I installed a mushroom style cap that still allows the breather to work altho I
don't expect to leave the tractor uncovered in the future.
#4 The generator does't "gen" and hasn't for some time. I'll be looking into that
as soon as I get some free time.
#5 Both the choke cable and the light switch are rusted fast and have been for years.
#6 Radiator fins were nearly plugged shut which I cleaned out with 100 PSI of air thru
an air nozzle with an extension and 90 deg. bend at the end.
The tractor runs really well and the P.O. had the head all reworked just before I bought it. I think she will appreciate all the TLC!!
