With the most recent power outage experienced, I've been looking at investing in a generator.  Neighbor has a Honda 5000 watt generator about 12 years old.  Good condition.  What would the value be?  Looking for a fair price.  He's suggested $900.  Thanks, Dave

Seems really high to me, but if it's in really, really good condition, it will bring whatever someone else feels is realistic.  A 5kw Honda, IMO, would fall more in the $400 range.

I've found 6kw liquid-cooled Kohler 4-cylinder generators from $250 to $600, all in excellent running condition... many years older, but with magneto ignition, and gasoline carbeurators AND propane mixers (dual fuel) in those ranges.  Bigger 4-cylinder liquid cooled units can be found for not much more... particularly old military and civil-defense machines, and they're tough as nails.

I guess the better question is... how much generating power do you actually need, what's the biggest LOAD you plan on starting, how frequently, and for how long do you expect to need it, and what do you plan on using for fuel?  If you're expecting long-duration outages during the winter, or needing to run an air-conditioning system in the middle of the summer, you'll be in a different category than running a refrigerator and ceiling fan in July...

Dave, I had one of them little units (I think it was 5500 watt) sold it and got a 50 KVA PTO driven generator and I can run the whole house and shop with it, I got mine for $2,000. it was one year old at the time I got it. You might look around at farm sales for a Wind Power PTO unit most of them where around 15 to 25 KVA and your D17 will play with it all day long. Then you can be the guy with all the lights on when the power's out.Big smile

The Honda Name brand units really hold their value, $900 for a 12 year old 5500 watt sounds a tweak high, but about right.  Now if it is only a Honda motor on some other brand of generator head, different story.

Well, what I'm looking at using it for is power outages as we recently experienced.  I have wood heat, so wouldn't need to run the furnace.  I do need to be able to run the well, lights and some of the appliances.  I know and trust the person selling it.  He's a mechanic who says he has maintained it very well.  Seemed a tab high to me, but knowing where it is coming from . . .

Just a tad high but knowing and trusting the seller does add value also. Honda is probably the best small unit around.
Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

Dave, I have a Honda 6500 generator in my work van.   Gets run 40 hrs a week, all year round.   This unit is 7 years old, I change the oil about once a month or so, and other then having the GFCI get really finicky on a very foggy day, it has never been in for service and doesn't burn any oil.   Honda makes the best generator by far, I don't think there's anyone that comes close.   A generator like that new is about 2000-2500, so at 900, if you need it, I wouldn't think twice about buying it.
